Jonny starred at the night’s sky. He smiled at it’s beauty. But still,  he
thought it’s not as beautiful as Jessie.  As though she was on cue, Jessie
walked out from the living room and stood behind Jonny on the balcony.
“’Tis a beautiful night, isn’t it?” she whispered, leaning her head
against his shoulder.
“Yes, that it is. But it pales in comparison to you.” He whispered back.
He turned and pulled her close.
Jessie smiled at his warmth. As nice as it was, her silk kimono wasn’t
warm against the ocean winds. His hands gently massaged her back and she leaned
her head against his broad shoulders.
“Not able to sleep?” she asked, looking up at his deep blue eyes, in
wonder.
“I… attempted to. But I couldn’t seem to think straight. My mind kept
wondering everywhere else but sleep, so I gave up.” His expression darkened, as
he reopened the wounds that he had tried to so desperately to close. “My mother
and father, today is their anniversary. That is why Dad is gone.”
Jessie nodded, no saying anything. She had dealt with a death to recently
and knew what it was like. She tightened her hold on Jonny as he leaned his head
on her shoulder, tears streaming down his cheeks.
“I still miss her, Jess. It doesn’t get easier. And I just want to be able
to feel human again, but I don’t even remember what that feels like. It’s been
so long. And poor dad, he… he didn’t deserve this. I mean, no one deserved
this.”
Jessie rubbed his back and bit her lip. She lowered her self down and laid
on the patio lounge, and motioned for Jonny to join her. He did so, leaning his
back against her body and she gently massaged his shoulders.
“It… it feels as though someone has taken your heart and cut a piece out
of it, but you can still feel was is happening to it.” She cried. Jonny nodded.
They sat there is complete silence. Finally, Jessie couldn’t stand it any more.
“Come on, we are going to my room.” She said and she pulled Jonny along
with her.
Once in Jessie’s room, Jonny sat on her bed. Jessie went rummaging through
some storage bins above her closet.
“What are you looking for, Jess?” he said, flipping through some of her
CD’s.
“Something that you were supposed to be given in a few months, but I think
that today will suit, just nicely.” She called out, her voice muffled.  She
finally popped her head out, and walked over to Jonny. She wrapped her arms
around his neck and straddled him, with a small package in her hand. Jonny
smiled, and curiously looked at the package.
“Your mother,” she explained. “Left this for you. But your dad didn’t know
about it. I found it while spring-cleaning a few years back. Care to open it an
see?”
Jonny looked at her eyes as she handed him the package. She got off of
him, and he opened it. Inside, was a picture. It was of Dr. Quest and Rachel, on
their wedding day. Jonny smiled. It was beautiful. He turned to Jessie.
“Thank you.” He kissed her gently.
“I thought that today was deserving of it.”
Jonny smiled. He starred at the picture for the longest time. Then he
turned and starred at Jessie. She smiled as he wrapped his arms around her and
lowered her to the bed. There sat Jonny on his back and Jessie leaning against
him. Soon, they both feels asleep, forgetting the pain that they had been forced
to suffer for so long.
