Jessica Bannon Quest sat on her bed, looking out the window. It was
a
lovely, moonless night. But the sight of the deep blue sky, and the
shining
stars brought her no pleasure; they only brought severe pain. Everything
reminded her of him. How many times had they shared sweet, urgent kisses
under the sky on nights like this? How many times had they strolled
at the
shore beside that bottomless ocean? How many times had they snuck out
of bed
and crept to the tower to make out on these arid nights?
Jessica sighed. There was no point in remembering things that would
never
happen again. That’s what every one kept telling her. To forget everything
and to keep telling herself that the pain would go away. But it hadn’t.
It had been more than two years since Jonny had died, leaving her in
a sea
of anguish. She had gone for a visit to her gynaecologist, to get the
results of her pregnancy tests. The results had been positive. Jessie
had
been ecstatic. She knew everyone would be so happy. She had stopped
to buy a
big cake to celebrate. When she got home, there was a crowd of people
gathered there. As she pushed her way through, she felt a strange dread
creep over her. When she finally got to the living room, she saw it.
And
screamed. She dropped the cake, and rushed to Jonny's lifeless form,
lying
there on the table, wrapped in a white sheet. She had yelled at him,
begging
him to open his eyes and look at her, but somehow, even in that mist
of pain
and disbelief, she had known that those azure eyes would never look
at her
again.
A sob escaped Jessica’s throat. She resisted the urge to start crying
again.
Why should she cry? This was a happy time. She was going to Jonny again.
A
small, gurgling sound forced her back to reality. She walked up to
the small
cradle where Rachel lay. The baby looked up at Jessica with trusting
blue
eyes. Jonny's eyes.
Jessica picked up the baby, and held her close.
“It’s OK, Rachel,” she whispered. “Grampa Benton, and Grampa Race and
Gramma
Estella are going to take good care of you. I know they will.”
She kissed the baby one last time before putting her down.
“It is time.” She whispered.
Jessica opened her bedside drawer and pulled out a bottle of sleeping
pills.
Uncapping the bottle, Jessica paused for a moment, remembering how
she used
to feel about suicide when she was young. She used to feel that wasting
your
own life was senseless. That life went on, even without the one you
loved.
“I never realized how wrong that was.”
The reason Jessica hadn’t killed herself earlier was because Rachel
had
needed her. But now Rachel was only a few months short of being two
years
old. Now Jessica could find release from this pain.
With a single movement of her hand, Jessica threw the pills into her
mouth
and swallowed them. Then she sat down on the bed, and waited for death.

Benton Quest could not sleep. He had not had a peaceful night in the
last
two and a half years. Every time her went to bed, he saw Jonny's dead
body,
and officer Reed saying,
“We’re very sorry Dr. Quest. Some unidentified people broke into Mr.
Quest’s
office and shot him. They escaped before we got there.”
And there was nothing Benton could do. He had just stood there, waiting
for
someone to tell him that it was all a lie, a joke. But no one told
him any
such thing.
A loud wail broke into his thoughts. Baby Rachel. The only evidence
of his
beloved son’s existence. Rachel wailed again.
Why doesn’t Jessie tend to her, he wondered.
A third cry set him onto his feet and he walked down to Jessie’s room.
He opened the door to find Jessie sprawled on the floor.
* * *
“Dr. Quest…too late…already spread through out…nothing we can do…”
“What kind of Dr. … How can you just give up…. save her…I’ll kill you!!!”
“Race! Please…”
To Jessie these were all blurry voices outside her world. She was lying
somewhere---she didn’t know where---- and in her mind whirled a kaleidoscope
of images.
She was fourteen again. She was with her mother, Estella, who was going
to
take her to meet her father for the very first time. They opened the
door to
the rest house’s waiting room, and her father was there. She hugged
him
tightly. When she broke apart from her dad, she saw him…
The first time ever I saw your face,
He smiled shyly at her, and she could feel her heart skip a beat. She
had
never seen anyone quite as charming…
I thought the sun rose in your eyes,
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave,
To the night and the empty skies, my love,
To the night and the empty skies…
His eyes were different from any shade of blue she had ever known. They
were
so light; they lit up her whole world; like the beautiful sunrise on
a
winter morn. And they twinkled so, just like the starts on a mid-summer
night…
Suddenly everything spun around her.
She was fifteen now, on a dark island with Jonny and Hadji. But somehow
she
was not herself and Jonny was not himself. And all of a sudden, she
was in a
warm embrace. Whose embrace it was, she did not know, but it was a
beautiful
sensation.
The first time, ever I kissed your mouth,
I felt the earth turn in my hand,
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love,
That was there at my command…
The gentlest lips in the entire universe were kissing her, now. She
was
atremble with that strange emotion people called love, and she did
not know
it. As the kiss ended, she knew it was Jonny kissing here, even before
she
opened her eyes.
A dark, searing pain enveloped her.
She was twenty-one years old now. She looked absolutely stunning, in
her
wedding gown, as she walked down the altar. And before she knew it,
she was
in Jonny's room, all alone with him.
The first time ever I lay with you,
And felt your heart beat close to mine,
I thought our joy would fill the earth,
And would last till the end of time, my love,
And would last till the end of time…
She would never forget the love they made that night. Though sweetly
painful, it was something she would not exchange for anything else
in
existence. She was so close to him; they were two bodies, two hearts
but one
soul…
“Dr. Quest, we are losing her!” Hadji’s voice. Hadji, her best friend.
“Good God, do something!” Dr Quest’s voice. Dr. Quest, her mentor.
“Jessie! Jessie please!” Her father’s voice. Her dear, dear father.
“Oh Jessie! Oh Jessie, please don’t die!” her mother’s voice. Her sweet,
understanding mother.
But the one voice she wanted to hear most was not there. Jonny's voice.
Jonny. Her sweetheart. Her husband. Her life.
“I’m coming, Jonny,” she whispered.
And she was floating, all of a sudden. She felt indescribable happiness.
There was no pain, no sorrow. She glided up, light as a feather, to
an
unknown destination, where. She knew he was waiting for her.
The end.
