Jessie was tired, so very tired. She was sweaty and grimy and every
muscle
in her body ached. She sat down on her bunk bed, in her tent. She was
at the
excavation of a tomb in Moen jo Daro. It was one of those times, when
she
felt ugly, ignored and unloved. She didn’t know why, but sometimes
she got
the crazy feeling that her mother didn’t love her---Estella only called
Jessie to her digs for the extra help. Which, of course, she didn’t.
But it
still felt that way, when Jessie was often left on her own, with no
one to
talk to at these stupid digs.
Jessie also felt that Race didn’t really care about her. Had he cared,
he
would never have left her when she was a kid. He would have gone with
her to
father-daughter picnics at her school, like her friends’ dads did.
Jessie shook her head to clear her head of these stupid thoughts, and
walked
to the tiny table that held a bottle of mineral water. There was also
a
piece of paper there. Jessie picked it up. It was an envelope with
her name
on it. From Jonny.
Jonny.
He probably thought of her as this homeless, ugly tomboy and pitied
her.
She tore open the envelope and sat down on the bed to read it.
Dear Jessie,
Ever since we laughed and cried together, under the Maine sunshine,
I have loved you.
Ever since we used to sneak up to the roof of the house past midnight
to
count the stars,
I have loved you.
Ever since we used to sing and dance in the mid-summer rains,
I have loved you.
It’s been so, so long now, that I myself do not remember, since when
I have
loved you.
Yours forever,
Jonny.
Jessie folded the letter gently and tucked it into her travelling bag.
A
large tear rolled down her cheek, but she was smiling. She had never
felt so
much love before. Each word in that letter exuded love. She took the
letter
out again, and reread it. She felt a deep wave of affection for the
person
who had so honestly, but so beautifully bared his heart to her. She
knew
Jonny was scared of showing his emotions, and for all his audacity,
he was
as fragile as glass, and vulnerable as a newborn baby inside.
She placed the letter in its envelope and put it back into the bag.
Jessie stood up and went to find Estella. She was going home… home
to the
boy who loved her so much… home to the boy she loved so much… a home
where
love was unspoken, where Dr. Quest still loved the woman who had died
so
many years before, and that was a love that only deepened day by day,
a home
where Race still harboured feelings for Estella, a woman he had not
been
with for such a long time. It was a home where every person felt nothing
but
love for the others.
A home where no one was unloved.
The End.
