New York City was in its full bloom when 21-year-old Jonathan Benton Quest
landed there, that lovely autumn morn.
He checked into the Trump International Hotel, and decided to go out for a
stroll.
As he walked, he remembered a time, so long ago, when he had visited NYC on
the way to Manhattan to find a hidden killer. He had had a big crush on
Jessie around then, and had bought her a lovely green scarf to match her
emerald eyes. But he never quite worked up the nerve to give it to her, and
it was still lying in one of his drawers at home.
He sat down on a bench, just enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the park
when he heard a child’s voice from nearby.
“Fur on a catfish, Mister! I told you I wanted a cone, not a cup!”
Jonny turned to see who it was. It was a small girl, only about four or five
years old, maybe, with shiny red curls, freckled pale cheeks and large
emerald green eyes. She was the spitting image of Jessie, when she had first
come to the Compound.
Before Jonny, could go to her, however, a tall, blond young man rushed over
to her and said.
“Hey, Kayla! Where did you wander off to?”
And he led the child away.

“It was the strangest feeling of déjà vu, Fatima.” Said Jonny, into the
phone. “The kid looked exactly like Jessie. I mean exactly.”
“Well, red hair and green eyes aren’t very unusual, you know. Maybe she was
just someone who looked like Jessie.” But she sounded unconvincing.
“Or maybe she was Jessie’s daughter.” Muttered Jonny, peevishly.

That afternoon, after lunch, Jonny went to the park again. He had taken this
week off, and he meant to enjoy every second of it.
Jus when her had settled himself comfortably on a bench, and had closed his
eyes, a rather loud music started. An ice cream truck.
Jonny decided to get an ice cream. As he was walking toward the truck, he
heard the child’s voice again.
“I WANT A CONE!!!!”
Jonny turned to look at the kid again. She was in the lap of a rather old,
but a muscular man, his strong arms wrapped protectively around her. Those
arms. Those arms had held Jonny so many times, protectively in the beginning
years, then in a friendly manner.
“RACE!!!!” yelled Jonny.
The man turned around to see who it was. At first, he seemed surprised, and
then a smile broke out on his face. He let go of the kid, and ran towards
Jonny, his arms outstretched.
“Jonny!!!”
They hugged each other, and almost burst into tears.
“What on Sam Hill are you doing here?!”
“Race!! Where have you been???!!”
Then, a small hand tugged at Jonny's trousers. It was the kid.
“Who are you, Mister?”
“Kayla, this is your uncle Jonny.”
“Oooh. He’s cute. Will you marry me when I’m older?”
“Sure thing, sweetie,” said Jonny, lifting Kayla into his arms.
He gave Race a questioning glance.
“Oh, sorry. Jonny, this is my daughter Kayla.”
Jonny's eyes nearly popped out of his head.
“Your daughter??!”
Race gave an embarrassed laugh.
“Yeah. Estella and I decided to settle down, after Jessie went to college.
We decided to have a normal life. And that includes kids.”
“So where is Jessie?”
“She just graduated from Princeton a couple of weeks ago and decided to take
a little vacation. So we decided to come her for a week. We’re staying at
the Trump.”
“The Trump? Hey, cool! I’m also staying there!”
“Then lets go back and catch up!”

Estella was waiting for them back at the hotel. So was Victor, the tall,
blond young man Jonny had seen in the park, and his fiancée Rose, who was
Estella’s niece.
They talked for hours about the experiences they’d shared and what they’d
been doing after leaving the Compound.
Just as Jonny was about to go to his own room, to freshen up for dinner,
there was a knock on the door.
“Come in,” called Estella.
The door opened, and in walked Jessie.
For a second, Jonny felt as though someone had knocked the breath of out
him. She had become *beautiful*.
Her hair had grown, he saw; it was down to her waist now. She had gained a
couple of inches and probably stood close to 5ft 8 inches in height. Her
skin was lightly tan, and she had become voluptuous. But her eyes, hey eyes
were exactly the same as they’d always been: curious, shy, loving,
intelligent.
And when she spotted him, those lovely blue-green eyes widened in surprise.
Then she ran over to him, and embraced him. She felt in his arms exactly had
that cold morning so may years ago, when they had said goodbye to each
other. Her smell, her touch, her feel was exactly the same.
“I’ve missed you, Jonny.” She whispered.
“Ditto, Jess.”

That night, as Jonny prepared to go to bed, there was a knock on his door.
“Come in.” he called.
Jessie walked in slowly. She was wearing a white robe over a light purple
sleeveless silk nightie. Her cheeks were slightly flushed, and she wouldn’t
meet his eyes.
He had never seen any girl quite as beautiful.
She walked up to him, and sat down on the bed, beside him.
“So, what’s up jess?”
Somehow, the atmosphere was strained, and tense.
“Nothing much… it’s just so nice to see you again. I’ve been wanting to, you
know.”
“Same here, jess.”
Before he knew what was happening, Jessie leaned forward and kissed him
softly on the lips. Her kiss felt the same as it had when, once, years ago;
they had kissed each other on Valentine’s Day (no one had been watching and
they had been tempted).
He leaned forward, kissing her in response, he felt her arms go around his
neck, and he placed hi sown hands at her waist. After a few more passionate
kisses, he moved the hair off her neck with one hand, and kissed her neck.
She gasped.
She lay back on the bed, as he lay on top of her, covering her neck and face
with soft kisses. He felt her fingers undoing the buttons on his shirt, and
pushing it off. In response, the untied the cord of her robe and pushed it
off.
Jonny felt his arms go completely around her and he felt as if he was being
enveloped in a voluptuous cocoon.
The magic began.

The next morning, Jonny opened his eyes, into a mass of bright red hair that
smelled of roses even after all these years. He pulled his head back to look
at the most beautiful girl in the world. After a while, she stirred, and he
noticed those blue-green eyes looking at him.
“I’ve never felt this way before, Jonny.” She said, earnestly.
“Neither have I.” He said with the same honesty.
“So where do we go from here?”
He felt this was the right moment.
“Jessie, you already made me so happy…”
She threw him a quizzical look. He continued.
“Will you now make me the happiest man in the world? Will you marry me?”
She looked at him for a second, before rushing into his arms, with a
breathless
“Yes.”
