“Receiving the gold medal in the Pre-Engineering program of The Harvard
Graduating class of 2010 is Mr. Jonathan Quest.”
There was a huge round of applause for the handsome blonde who had
won a
gold medal in all of his subjects.
Jonathan rose from his seat, a striking smile on his very fetching
face, and
went to the stage to collect his degree and medal. As he took his medal,
and
degree, he turned toward the audience. He spotted his father, looking
very
proud. Jonathan waved to him, and his stepmother Elena Stazny Quest.
They
waved back, still smiling proudly.
Later, as the three sat together in a restaurant in Boston, Dr. Quest
said,
“I’m so proud of you, son. You know, your mother and I graduated from
Harvard.”
“I know, Dad. I’m glad I got a chance to go to the same school as you
and
mom.”
“Angel,” started Elena. “I received a call from Hadji. He wants you
to come
to Bangalore as soon as possible.”
“Why on Earth?”
“You, see, Angel. He is soon going to be a proud papa!”
“No way!! Hadji’s going to be a DAD?! I’m leaving tomorrow!!”
The Bangalore Palace was one big party house. All Hadji’s cousins on
both
his maternal, and paternal sides were there. Everyone was celebrating
the
announcement that Hadji and Fatima would soon become parents.
Jonny was also busy celebrating. But he felt as though something was
missing.
Later that night, when everyone had retired to bed, Jonny entered Hadji’s
apartments. Hadji sat on the bed, an Fatima in a rocking chair.
“You seemed distracted tonight, Jonny.” Commented Fatima.
“Yes, I could not help but notice that you seemed rather reserved.”
Said
Hadji.
Fatima gave Hadji a quick look and then turned to Jonny.
“The princess of Hathipur is rather pretty, don’t you think?”
Jonny gave her a dangerous look before nodding slowly.
“Jonny,” started Hadji. “We think you should find the girl and settle
down.”
“But Hadji, I…”
“Jonny,” interrupted Fatima. “He said you should find the girl and
settle
down.”
“Huh.”
“I meant the girl whom you were thinking of tonight.”
“Jessie.” Said Hadji with a grin.
“Huh? Jessie?”
“Jonny,” said Hadji, his mouth curling into a knowing smile. “We know
she’s
the only one for you. You don’t have to say anything. I’ve seen this
look on
your face many times in these past five years. She is the only girl
for
you.”
Jonny thought about it. He was a handsome, intelligent, rich young
man, but
he hadn’t had a single steady girlfriend all through college. He found
himself subconsciously comparing each girl to Jessie. Kira wasn’t as
beautiful. Lisa wasn’t as smart. Melody wasn’t as exciting. Linda wasn’t
as
funny. And no other girl could creep behind those layers of self-assurance,
and confidence, and get to know the real Jonny Quest as Jessie had.
She was the only one for him; there was no denying it.
“I’m going to New York tomorrow,” stated Jonny. “I’ll be there for
a week.
And after that, I’m going to find Jessie.”
“That’s fantastic!”
“Wonderful!”
The end. For now.
