Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
I was sitting on the balcony basking in the gentle breeze blowing off
of the
Atlantic Ocean. The muted sounds of children playing on the beach was
punctuated by shouts of joy drifted up to where I was sitting. A pod
of
dolphins had come closer into shore to feed on a school of fish. I
was more
interested in watching the scenery than reading the book on my lap.
My
reprieve was interrupted by a baritone voice shouting my name. "Wilhelmina
Stoker Harkness!"
"Yes, Love?" I replied without looking at him.
"By what right did you do such a thing?" The baritone voice rumbled
as it
moved closer. Its owner dropped into the chair opposite me.
I looked over the rim of a glass of Coca-Cola at him before I took a
sip.
"My mommy says I'm special! Why do you always call me Wilhelmina Stoker
Harkness when you're upset with me?"
He scowled at me, his periwinkle blue eyes stormy. He crossed his long
legs
and steepled his fingers under his new-minted penny colored beard.
"For the
same reason why you call me Doctor Quest when you're angry with me."
"I'm going to kill her," echoed from the inner recesses of the room
as a
red-shirted projectile moved swiftly towards me.
"Snow, calm down. It's just a second set of holes in her ears." I stretched
and yawned. "It could have been a navel ring . . . That's what she
wanted."
Race Bannon growled at me. "I don't care . . . I'm going to toss your
rear
off of this balcony. I can't believe you would do something like that
without getting my permission first."
I looked over the balcony. "You do realize that the pool is below us
and the
chances of me getting hurt are zero to minimal."
Jonny Quest wandered out onto the balcony. "Twirly, twirly, twirly,"
he sang
as he played with the brightly colored pinwheel he was holding. The
setting
sun flashed off of the diamond stud in his ear.
A groan issued from his father. I couldn't resist the temptation to
tease
him. "You know, Benton, a small, gold hoop would make you look quiet
roguish."
Race Bannon laughed at my suggestion. "Doctor, I can just see you now
addressing a group of your colleagues wearing an earring."
"That is not funny, Race." Benton Quest said as he scrubbed his face
with
his hands before turning to look at the beach.
Jessie Bannon and the Doctor's adopted son, Hadji, and Bandit joined
us on
the crowded balcony. Bandit kept trying to jump up and lick Hadji's
hands.
"Hey, what's up with Bandit?" Jonny asked.
"My hand smells like jelly." Hadji replied as he toyed with the diamond
stud
in his ear. It was the mate of the one in Jonny's ear.
Jessie Bannon walked over and leaned against the balcony watching the
dolphins play. Race shook his head. "I guess a second set of earrings
is
better than a belly button ring."
Jessie pouted, "Yeah, but I really wanted a belly button ring."
"Oh, don't feel to bad, Jess. I wanted to get my tongue pierced." Jonny
was
petting Bandit and didn't see the horrified look cross his father's
face. I
couldn't help but smile at the sight, or the thought of what his reaction
would have been if I had let Jonny have his way.
Jade joined us for dinner at The Outrigger in North Myrtle Beach. Jonny
and
I had a hush-puppy-eating contest; I just love the tangy, honey-mustard
dipping sauce that they serve with them. When it came time for dessert
Jade
declined, she also declined the offer to accompany us to the Family
Kingdom
Amusement Park. "Race and I are going clubbing after the kids go to
bed,"
Jade said with a twinkle in her eyes. She tossed a wave to us as she
roared
off in her red, convertible sports car.
We drove south along King's Highway towards the Family Kingdom Amusement
Park. The kids chatting and pointing at all of the different Putt-Putt
Gold
Courses. They wanted to stop and play but I suggested that they wait
until
tomorrow when they could play from eleven o'clock to five o'clock and
as
many times as they wanted for the same price as one game would cost
after
five. All three agreed that it did make sound economical sense and
that it
would be more fun to play all day instead of just one round.
When we got to the amusement park we all bought wristbands so, we could
ride
as many of the rides as we wanted and as often as we wanted. The kids
and I
headed off to the Himalaya ride, leaving Race and Doctor Quest sitting
on a
bench people watching.
"I didn't know you could do THAT with a rubber band and a stick of butter."
I heard Benton say as we approached the bench.
I remembered the incident that Bannon must have been telling him about.
"Actually, I think it was margarine and not butter." I said as I sat
down
beside Benton, taking his hand in mine.
"I can't believe it's not butter!" Jonny mockingly cried. "Can we ride
the
Swamp Fox next?" He said pointing towards the large wooden roller coaster.
Hadji turned slightly pale as Jessie seconded Jonny's idea.
Race and I continued to sit on the bench with the Doctor. Jessie grabbed
Race's hand and tugged him off of the bench. "Come on, Dad. You can
ride
with Hadji."
Race was led away muttering. Doctor Quest looked at me, "What was he
muttering?"
I laughed before answering him. "Oh, he was muttering about how thrilled
he
was that Jessie was giving him the honor of being hurled on by Hadji."
Benton stared at me for a few minutes before he started to laugh. "Well,
while they're gone to ride the roller-coaster, would you like to ride
the
Ferris-wheel with me? I promise I won't hurl on you."
"I thought you would never ask. Besides, maybe we'll get stopped on
top, the
view from up there is spectacular."
We did get stopped on top. The moon was full, the stars bright and the
ocean
danced with silver light. "It's beautiful, isn't it?" I said wistfully
as I
turned to look at my companion.
"Yes, beautiful." He sighed, caressing my cheek with the back of his
hand,
before leaning towards me and kissing me.
I was so caught up in the kiss that I didn't notice we were moving until
I
was brought back to reality by the catcalls, cheers and clapping of
the
people on the ground. I moved away, blushing madly from Benton. "Don't
tell
me you've never been kissed on a Ferris wheel before?" He teased. My
silence
was all the response he needed to make him start laughing.
When we were disembarking from the gondola the college-aged guy loading
and
unloading passengers said something to Doctor Quest. When I asked what
he
had said, Benton laughed and hugged me. "Just some words of encouragement."
"Really, such as?" I questioned.
"He thought I didn't need any but he wanted to wish me good-luck and
that he
thought I might 'get lucky' tonight. Am I?" Benton leered at me, periwinkle
blue eyes dancing with mischief and a lopsided grin that could melt
the
iciest of hearts. I gave him a mock glare and didn't say anything.
We found the kids eating cotton candy while watching Race play the ring
toss
game. Bannon wore a look of bored detachment on his face as he won
another
stuffed animal. He had already won a large garbage bag full of the
things.
Jessie mentioned that she wanted to get a hair wrap and Jonny said that
he
wanted to ride the Swamp Fox again. Hadji also stated that he would
like to
ride it again too. We gave away all of the stuffed animals. As I started
walking away with Jessie, Bannon grinned evilly at Benton Quest. "I'll
ride
with Jonny, Doctor."
I heard Benton ask Hadji. "You're not going to regurgitate all over
me, are
you?"
Hadji's reply was laced with mild indignation. "No, Sir. My stomach
is
feeling settled and now that I've ridden it once there will not be
any
problems."
Jessie and I returned from the hair wraps booth to discover Jonny curled
up
on a bench softly moaning with his head pillowed on his father's lap.
Hadji
was making worried sounds and holding a cup of Coca-Cola. Benton was
looking
every bit the concerned father as he gently brushed Jonny's bangs off
of his
forehead while making soft hushing noises. Race Bannon was walking
towards
us from the directions of the restrooms; a large stain was visible
on his
blue jeans. With impish delight, I asked. "Bladder control problem?"
Bannon scowled at me but didn't say anything. It was Hadji that supplied
me
with the answer I already knew. "I am afraid that all of the cotton
candy
was Jonny's undoing."
Jessie giggled with glee. "Hey, Jonny, let's go ride the tilt-a-twirl."
Jonny moaned feebly in response.
"Here let me have the drink and I'll stay here with him while the rest
of
you go ride some more rides." I said, taking the cup from Hadji's hand
and
making shooing motions with the other.
Benton, Race, Hadji and Jessie left voicing their concerns and sympathy.
I
encouraged Jonny to sit up and take a couple of small sips of the soft
drink. He moaned and laid his head on my shoulder. I put my arm around
him
and kissed his temple before beginning to gently hum to him. Within
a few
minutes he was still and calm. "Feeling better?"
"Yeah," Jonny replied as he breathed in deeply the warm summer night's
air.
"You smell nice."
I laughed, "Thank you. I think . . . "
He laughed, "You're welcome." Shortly afterwards, the others returned.
Jonny
said he was feeling better but he didn't think he wanted to ride any
more
rides.
We drove back to the hotel along Ocean Boulevard, past the amusement
park
downtown, The Pavilion and past the boardwalk. We were accompanied
by the
sounds of loud radios playing in the other cars that were 'dragging
the
strip.' Guys prowled for gals shouting lines that were old back when
I was
their age. Girls trawled for guys looking hot, indifferent and bored
in
expensive sports cars paid for with daddy's money.
Benton chuckled over a sign outside one of the shops advertising that
they
would pierce anything. His amusement was short lived when Jonny confirmed
that they really would pierce ANYTHING. I glanced over in time to see
Benton
blanch and then flush over the thoughts of exactly what anything could
be.
Jade was waiting for us when we got to the hotel. Race excused himself
to
change clothes while we explained why to Jade. The kids all wondered
off to
prepare for bed. Doctor Quest, Jade and I were making small talk when
Race
returned. The sight of him momentarily stunned Jade and me. I must
admit,
Bannon cut a dashing sight in a body hugging black, silk shirt and
pale
gray, dress slacks. Benton softly chuckled; he had spent enough years
around
Race Bannon that he was use to women having that sort of reaction to
him.
As the couple left, I called after them. "Don't do anything I wouldn't do."
Jade shouted back. "What? We will be back in five minutes in that case.
Besides, that would make for a VERY boring evening."
Doctor Quest waved them on. "Have fun, kids!"
"Don't worry we will and don't wait up, Dad." Race yelled up at us as
Jade's
car pulled away from the hotel.
Benton Quest and I walked out onto the balcony. We stood there watching
as
white crested, inky black waves crashed upon the deserted beach. I
ran my
hands up and down Benton's arms. "Are you still mad about the ear piercing?"
"No," he chuckled pulling me into the circle of his arms. "Not after
seeing
the sign in the shop advertising that they would pierce anything."
I smiled up at him. "Don't worry I would have vetoed that and by the
end of
the summer it won't make a difference."
"How so?" His breath was warm against my temple.
"He'll have taken the earring out and lost it in a couple of weeks."
I
snuggled closer.
Jessie stuck her head through the doorway from the connecting suite.
"Good-night everybody." A chorus of goodnights answered her.
"And Hadji?" He whispered against my lips. "What about him?"
"He'll keep his, it fits him well and it adds to his exotic looks."
I
whispered back enjoying the soft tickle of his facial hair against
my face.
"They're making out on the balcony!" We sprang apart, startled by the
voice.
"Hadji has been bidding the two of you good-night for the last ten
minutes
and neither one of you has responded." Jonny's voice scolded us. We
couldn't
see his face because; he was backlit by a lamp in the suite's livingroom.
"Good-night, Hadji," I called.
Benton Quest shouted. "Good-night, Son." Jonny continued to stand there
watching us. "Go to bed, Son . . . NOW." Benton mockingly growled at
the
teenager.
I wiggled my fingers at the dark silhouette. "Good-night, Jonny."
The figure turned around and stalked back along the hallway towards
the two
connecting bedrooms. We couldn't hear the question Hadji asked Jonny
but we
did hear most of Jonny's response. "Nope, but they were groping each
other
and his hand was on her . . ."
Benton Quest and I looked at each other; both of us were mildly embarrassed
by the comment. Doctor Quest rolled his eyes and chuckled, "Kids!"
I shook my head and smiled up at him. "Now where were we?" He asked
as he
stepped closer to me.
"Just about here . . . " I said, pulling his head down to mine and kissing
him.
The silvery moon and the twinkling stars blazed in the black velvet
sky
above while the dark waters of the Atlantic Ocean below sparkled with
reflected light.

Meach
