From his crouched position Hadji gently scratched
Bandit behind the
ears. "Hey boy. It's nice to see you too."
Four figures strolled up from the house as the taxi
retreated down the
lane. As he stood he came face to face with a very perturbed
red-head.
"Hadji Singh, you were told to call us as soon as your plane came in."
Hadji grinned at her as he picked up his suitcase.
"I am sorry Jessie
but it's so early that I thought it best not to disturb you."
His blonde headed brother snatched his suitcasee
from his grasp. "Ah,
Hadji, you oughtta know that you're never a problem. We would've
been glad
to pick you up."
Dr. Quest gave him a hug. "It's nice to see
you again Hadji. How was
your visit with Neela?"
Hadji grinned as he returned the hug. "Most
wonderful, Dr. Quest and
she sends you her blessings."
He felt a hand on his shoulder as he pulled away
from Dr. Quest's
embrace. From the corner of his eye he saw that it was Race and
he clasped
the hand that was held out to him affectionately. "It's good
to see you
again, Race."
"You too, kid." The older man seemed a little
embarasses. "But how
about we goo inside before these mosquittos steal all of my all american
blood?"
Smiling, as he swatted at one of the forementioned
mosquittos, Hadji
nodded his agreement and the group paraded inside the house.
-------------------------
Hadji tossed in his bed but couldn't seem to find
a more comfortabel
position. Finally giving up he sighted and climbed out of the
warm nest
he'd made of his blankets. Slowly he put on his slippers and
with a long
look at his turban and shirt lying over the back of his desk chair
he
decided to leave them there, mostly because of the heat.
Crossing the room he slipped into the hallway.
The light coming from
underneath Jonny's door dreeww his attention. A knowing smile
curved his
lips. Ever since he'd come to live with the Quests', Jonny had
tended to
fall asleep without remembering to turn his light off and for just
about as
long, Hadji had slipped in and shut it off. Chuckling softly
to himself he
marveled at how some things didn't change.
As quiet as a cat he paded to the door and opened
it without a sound.
There on the bed, his blanket on the floor and his head against the
pillow,
almost hitting the headboard, was Jonny. He seemed to have grown
in the
two months Hadji had been gone, so much so he barelly fit within the
perimeters of his bed. Chuckling again he grabbed the blankeet
from the
floor and gently settled it over his brother's body. Getting
up to leave
he nearly fell as his foot came down on a bottle and it was all he
could do
to keep his balance.
Reaching down he picked it up and stared at the
unmarked vitamin
bottle. Curious, but not one to snoop he was about to set it
on the night
stand when he noticed the lid was open, broken from when he stepped
on it.
With a quick glance at Jonny's traquil face Hadji
decided to see if he
could 'borrow' a lid from some of the pill bottles in the medicine
cabinet
in the upstairs bathroom.
Rummaging through the cabinet he found what he was
looking for. He
removed the broken lid easily but the other was much more difficult.
As it
finally came loosee his elbow knocked the bottle he'd found in Jonny's
room
to the floor.
With a shake of his head he started scooping the
loose pills into his
palm, but he stopped suddenly as he looked at them a little harder.
During
the time he'd been Dr. Quest's assitant he had had to study a wide
range of
topics, one of which had been drugs, illegal and legal. And the
ones he
held in his hand was definitely an illegla stimulant. With that
realization his whole body shook. Ever so slowly he put them
back in the
bottle and closed the new lid over the mouth.
With a calm he didn't feel he re-entered Jonny's
room and seet the
bottle back on his nightstand. Then with a trembling hand he
gently shook
him awake. Jonny's confused eyes blinked open as he stared at
his friend.
"Hadj. Wha?" He glanced at his alarm clock and froze as
his eyes seettled
on the bottle of pills.
Ever so slowly he turned back to Hadji. Hadji
didn't say anything but
let his eyes ask the dreaded question. "Hadji. It's not
what it looks
like. A friend of mine... he put them in my backpack because
he'd gotten
caught, I didn't even realize he had until I got home. I was
planning on
telling Dad but he was so busy and Race was gone most of the day with
Jessie..."
Over the years Hadji had learned when Jonny lied
and when he told the
truth. Looking into his brother's blue eyes he knew he was telling
the
truth. Moving on an impulsee he pulled Jonny into a hug.
"That's all I
needed to know, my friend. That's all I need to know."
