A KINGDOM AS GREAT (2/2)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Okay everyone!" Mr.
Miller called over a megaphone. "If you will
please, quietly enter the building. Please try..."
"Look!" A voice called
from the crowd and everyone turned to the
building. It was glowing brightly in red. The shape of
the bricks
seemed to wave around and disperse until it was no longer visible.
The
only thing left to their sight, was the brown dirt under the area the
building was.
There was a wave of cheering
that came over everyone in the parking
lot. Only the sad cries were muffled. Hadji looked in horror
through
tears at the empty building lot. Jessie, Jonny. Where are
you?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"That was fun!" Jessie
jumped into his arms and sighed. "I think I
can get used to this."
"Oh me too." Binx
pulled her up and kissed her once again. Every
time
they touched Jessie felt that she would melt away in his strong arms.
He lit a spark in her that she never imagined could ever be.
There was
just one thing that made her not want to go on. Something was
holding
her back. Something so strong that she couldn't even control.
She
thought that she could beat anything that would hold her away from
Binx,
but she didn't know what that one thing was.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jonny managed to get the
light on after feeling around for ten
minutes.
He dug around through all the tools until he found a screwdriver and
hammer. He placed the screwdriver in the key hole and hit the
back with
the hammer. The door swung open and banged against the wall loudly.
Jessie turned toward the noise down the hall. "I thought no one
was
left in the building?" Binx smiled.
"I'm sorry Jessie.
I might be very powerful, but I'm not perfect."
They walked along the halls and followed where they last heard the
noise. They held hands as they walked, feeling the intensity
of their
powers as they touched.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jonny went back into the
closet to grab is jacket that he had laid
on
the floor. He swung it around himself when he heard footsteps
coming
down the hall. Good, everyone must be coming back in. He
walked out
looking down at his jacket for any dust spots, then looked up.
He found
himself staring into a pair of brown eyes that held something that
he
had never seen before.
"Jonny?" He turned
around and saw Jessie smiling at him, and for a
moment he couldn't breathe. "What are you still doing in here?"
"I got locked in the closet."
"How did you manage to do
that?" He glanced down as Jessie talked
and
saw their hands. He looked over at Binx who was smiling and
understanding what Jonny was thinking.
"I guess I just have bad
luck." He fell silent and turned to walk
away.
"Why don't you say good-bye
to Jonny. We must get going before my
Lord
gets upset with us." Jessie nodded and jogged over to Jonny.
Binx
leaned back on the wall and smiled. Everything that he had planned
for
him and Jessie played in his mind.
"Jonny, wait up."
She got up next to him and followed him around
the
corner away from Binx's sight.
"What do you want?"
"Will you hold up for a
minute?" He stopped and looked her straight
in
the eye just a few feet from the front door.
"What?" She couldn't
remember what she was going to say. She had
suddenly realized what that one thing keeping her from leaving was.
Ever since she meet Jonny they had been friends. They never planned
on
anything developing from their years together, but she found herself
wanting nothing more than to hear his laughter until the end of time,
talk about their deepest secrets, argue about stupid things.
"I-I...."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hadji stood in the empty
parking lot with only three other people,
Mr.
Miller, Patty, and a cop. It had been about half an hour since
the
school building vanished ,and Hadji wasn't about to leave without both
of his friends. He wished that Benton and Race hadn't left town
for the
weekend. He felt there had to be something he could do.
"Hadji." He turned
around and Patty walked up. Her knees were
showing
slightly under her jacket, and they were as white as the surrounding
snow. "Have you heard anything about Jonny?"
"No." He could tell
at that point that she really did like him. To
him, Patty seemed like the type who never really got to know anyone,
but
when it came to Jonny, it was a little different.
"I just wish there was something
somebody could do." Hadji's eyes
followed the side walk until he saw the beginning of the front steps
to
the door. He picked up a rock and threw it towards the middle
of the
building plot, but it bounced onto the ground at the edge of the side
walk.
Hadji's eyes lit up.
"I think I have an idea."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"What are you trying to
say Jessie?" She leaned forward and took a
deep breath.
"I have to leave."
"Well when are you coming
back?"
"I don't think I ever will."
"Why? Where are you
going?"
"It's a long story.
Just trust me, it's better this way."
"But what about Race and
the others? You can't leave them."
Jessie snickered.
"Dad doesn't need me. I just get in the way."
"What about me?" He
walked up closer and made his voice soft.
"I'll
miss you so much." He picked up her hand. "I have something
I need to
tell you."
A voice from the side answered
for her. "Well it's going to have to
wait Jonny." They turned around and saw Binx standing between
them and
the door. Jessie looked at Jonny and slowly took her hands from
his.
"I'm sorry Jonny.
There's nothing here for me anymore. Binx has
given
me something that I never could explain."
"Jessie, I love you and
I don't want you to go. I know we have our
differences, but I know that together, we can make this work."
So there
she was. Standing between two men who have confessed their love
for
her, and she was forced to choose. In her mind she heard a voice,
and
she recognized it as being Binx. *Jessie, stop all of this nonsense,
and come with me. Jonny could never understand what you are.
Humans
fear us and kill us. Do you want to be killed by the one who
says he
loves you? I can prove it until the death of this planet.
Let me love
you.*
She turned to Jonny with
a tear in her eye. "I'm sorry. You just
don't understand what I am." She walked into Binx's arms and
he smiled
down at her.
"You made the right choice,
but you aren't totally devoted to me."
"Yes I am."
"No, or you wouldn't have
came so close to picking Jonny. I'm sorry
I
have to do this." He pressed her against the wall and he closed
his
eyes. A red light circled around her as she screamed out in fear.
Bars
suddenly appeared around her, making a cage to hold her in.
"What are you doing?
I picked you!" He turned to the horror
stricken
Jonny and laughed.
"When he's out of the picture
we can't be stopped." Binx threw his
arms up and the red glow flamed from his entire body.
His human form was quickly
transforming into a large brown bat. His
teeth became six inches long and he was ten feet tall. Jonny
looked to
his side and saw a fire extinguisher hung up next to him. Binx
flung
his claw at Jonny who was barely able to jump out of the way.
He
couldn't get to the fire extinguisher now and he realized that Binx
was
coming in fast. *This is it.* He thought. *This is
how it all ends.*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hadji ran up the walk-way
with his shoulder bracing for impact. He
hit
the invisible door like a rock and flew in as he hoped. He landed
inside the building, rolled, then sat up on all four like a cat.
He
looked up and almost fell back at the sight of the beast. He
looked in
front of him and saw Jessie screaming through the bars around her.
"Hadji look out!"
Jonny's warning , screamed out of the closing
door
and out onto the street.
Patty had watched Hadji
bust his way in, then heard Jonny's voice
from
inside as Hadji disappeared. Mr. Miller and the cop weren't paying
any
attention to what was going on over twenty feet away. Patty slowly
walked up to the spot where Hadji had ran to. She felt along
the front
until she found the door handle and pushed it. It snapped
open and she
carefully peered in.
Hadji was running around
a huge animal with Jonny in the front.
They
moved around it throwing off his concentration. Patty looked
over and
saw Jessie holding the bars tightly with her eyes closed, but soon
gave
up her attempt of escape. Jonny ran over and finally grabbed
the fire
extinguisher and threw it at Binx's face. He caught it in his
teeth and
flung it back towards Jonny. He went to jump out of the way,
but it hit
his leg, sending him hard to the floor.
"No!" Everyone fell
silent and turned to the door. Patty came all
the
way in then ran to Jonny's side. "Stop! Don't hurt him anymore."
She
pushed the extinguisher off his leg and laid his head on her lap.
Jonny looked up at her surprised.
"Patty, what are you doing here?"
"I couldn't just watch him
hurt you. I love you." She bent down
and
kissed him with everything she was worth. Binx shrunk down turning
back
to his attractive human form, and looked over at Jessie. She
fell down
to her knees and hung her head down. Binx walked
up to Jessie and
spoke with his softest voice.
"Can we leave now?"
She nodded.
"No more, please."
Binx waved his hands and the bars disappeared.
He
kneeled down next to her and laid his arm around her shoulders.
"Come, I don't think I have
to worry about him anymore." With a
flash
of red light, they were gone.
Hadji looked down at the
stunned Jonny and the passionate Patty.
"Jonny." He finally was able to pull away from Patty and look
up at
Hadji. "She just left with Binx." Jonny looked over and
saw the wall
that Jessie was once pinned to but saw nothing.
"Where did they go?"
Hadji shrugged.
"They just disappeared."
"Jonny why are you so worried
about her." Patty pulled his hair
back
with her hand.
"Patty, please." He
sat up and moaned in pain. "I'm sorry but I
don't
like you that way. I love Jessie." The statement on her
face faded
from a smile. "If you would only let me explain..."
*Slap!*
"Jonathan Quest, if you
ever come near me again I will kill you!"
She
stood up and slammed through the front door. Jonny felt the bruise
on
his cheek and looked up at Hadji.
"This is not your day my
friend." Hadji commented and Jonny fell
back
with his hands over his eyes.
"I've had better."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jessie checked out the room
that she was now in. It was a cave with
familiar looking rocks. She turned to the entrance and saw the
initials
carved to the side. JQ+HS+JB=BFF. "Look familiar?"
She turned to Binx and nodded.
"I used to come here all the time
with
Hadji and Jonny."
"I know. I watched
you from the back, for many years." She started
remembering the last time she was there. She had been nervous
about a
presentation she was to do in front of the entire class for 8th grade
graduation. Hadji stayed after school to study for the big test
while
she and Jonny raced to the cave like they did every day. They
started
talking and Jessie could almost remember every word spoken.
{Flashback} (Author's note: sorry guys, but you'll like
this one)
"I'm so scared that I'm
going to say something wrong." She was
sitting
on the ground next to Jonny.
"You'll do good Jessie.
I know you will." He had been so
understanding that day, and she needed the encouragement. They
were in
the entrance to the cave and looked around at the green meadow that
surrounded them.
"But what if everyone starts
laughing at me for what I say? I don't
want to look stupid."
"You never look stupid."
He sat his hand down, and it accidentally
landed on hers. They looked up at each other. Jessie closed
her eyes
as she remembered his kiss. She hadn't thought of it in so long,
she
never imagine it would return so easily.
"Jessie." She opened
her eyes and looked into Binx's face having to
return to reality. "That was a long time ago. Just remember
that we
are better than they are, even Jonny." He took her hand and led
her to
the back wall. As they approached he fell to one knee and pulled
her
down to do the same. With their heads down, a red beam of light
came
from the dark and warmed their skin
"Is this our queen?"
The deep, loud voice sent a chill down
Jessie's
spine.
"Yes my father. She
is a full blood." Binx kept his eyes to the
ground.
"Please Dear, stand and
look at the light so I can see you better."
She stood as told and looked straight into the light.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"She's thinking about that
cave we used to go to during junior
high."
"The one down the dirt road?"
Hadji drove the car down the streets
of
the town as Jonny discovered his link with Jessie. "Does she
realize
that you can hear her thoughts?"
"I don't know. It
just happened suddenly. She was remembering
something that we did one day." He smiled when he recalled the
kiss.
"She's very worried about something."
"What? Is it a person
or an animal?" Jonny listened for a moment.
"Neither. "
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Binx stood up in the red
spot light and put his arm around Jessie's
waist. "My Lord, Jessie is not only a full blood, but she has
many
talents." As he bragged on about her, she thought out to Jonny.
*Jonny, I don't know if
I want you to come. Binx is very strong and
capable of doing things that I don't even know about. If you
come, I
don't think I would be much help.*
Jonny fell quiet in the
car, and Hadji turned to him. "What is it
Jonny?"
"She doesn't want us to
come." He closed his eyes and thought to
her.
*I know I can do stupid things and say even worse things, but I know
that I don't want to lose you. Not now. Whatever
it is that you can't
tell me, I know I can handle.*
Binx looked over to Jessie
and smiled. "My Lord, when are you
wanting
to have the royal wedding?"
"We must wait for the royal
priest to get here. I think we'll do it
tomorrow. Once you two are married, you can move in a more human
living
quarter if you prefer."
"You mean a house."
Jessie suggested.
"If you'd like, but I was
thinking more of terms of a very large
castle. It will be more room for your children."
"How many are we suppose
to have?" She turned to Binx and he
nervously
smiled back.
"Not many. Only 20,22
at the most."
"Only!?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hadji and Jonny pulled the
car up to the entrance of the cave and
quietly walked to the large opening. The snow flew around them
and
Jonny's arms ached from the fierce cold. They looked in, but
the
shadows were too dark to make out any shapes. From the blackness
they
could hear Jessie's voice.
"Binx, I can't do this.
I'm not royalty material here."
"Of course you are.
If you would like, I can show you more examples
of
how powerful you are."
"Is there any way you can
take my power away and give it to someone
else?" Binx shook his head.
"If you give your power
away, you'll die." She sighed and thought
harder.
"Didn't you say that if
two full bloods were to breed they would
only
produce half bloods?"
"That's only true for weaker
full bloods. That's why I'm prince.
My
father was the most powerful of all the bloods and I became a more
powerful full blood than any of the others along with my brothers and
sisters. I'm the only one that can go out in the sunlight."
He picked
up her hands. "Our children will rule the half bloods until the
destruction of this planet. All my brothers were killed during
the
civil war and my five sisters were burned because humans thought that
they were witches. I'm the only hope left for my people."
"I know there has to be
others that you can find." The red light
suddenly flashed and Jessie screamed out. In a second there was
no
light, then a soft glow started next to her and Binx. There,
stood a
man that looked much like Binx. His eyes held years of knowledge
and
life, but he didn't look a day over thirty.
"Jessica, my son has searched
for many years and has chosen you
because
he felt that you were the most suited for the occupation. It
is too
late for us to turn back now." The red light's voice came from
the
gentle human form of itself.
From outside the cave Jonny
and Hadji could see everything that was
going on less than ten feet in front of them. Jonny motioned
for Hadji
to follow him as they inched their way in with their backs to the wall.
"I can't do this.
I love someone else." Jessie could feel Jonny's
presence, and by the look on Binx's face, he could too. It looked
like
Binx's father was too upset to notice anything.
"We will find another to
take your place, but she is going to have
powers." He grabbed Jessie's shoulders and she cried out in pain.
He
was draining her of her strength and she fell to her knees.
"Jonny?" Binx's father
let go of Jessie and turned to the entrance
of
the cave. Patty stood in her pink coat and held a flashlight.
"Jonny
are you in here? I saw your car parked outside and..."
Binx's father
held out his hand and a flash of energy bolted from his fingertips.
Hadji jumped to her in reflex and knocked her out of the way, just
in
time. Jessie quickly stood up and ran over to Jonny.
"You can't get away that
easy." He went for Jessie and Jonny, but
Binx
jumped into the middle.
"No father. I love
her too much to let you kill her. I can find
someone else."
"There's no time."
He went to pass Binx, but Binx pushed him back.
"I'm warning you.
Don't touch her." Hadji stood up and helped lead
Patty to the side. She went to say something, but he softly laid
his
hand over her mouth.
"Binx, there is a way I
can keep from killing her." His father
sighed
and smiled.
"How father?"
"Kill you and breed her
myself." He flung his hand to Binx as it
transformed into a claw. Binx fell hard to the floor with blood
all
over his face. His father turned to Jessie, but Jonny pulled
her around
behind him. The man laughed and looked at Jonny with an approving
smile.
"You have courage, but it's
not much use." As he walked up, Jonny
braced for impact, but the man fell to the side. They looked
down and
saw Binx holding his father's ankle. He smiled and fell
back with his
eyes closed.
The man went to stand again,
but this time Jessie jumped at him.
She
grabbed at his throat, her eyes burning with a red glow, but he pushed
her off like a leaf sending her flying to the wall. He stood
up and
walked to Binx who wasn't awake. Jonny jumped forward and pushed
with
all of his power. The man fell back and landed right at the entrance
to
the cave where the sun's light peeked in. He screamed out as
his skin
sizzled off his face. Hadji covered Patty's eyes and turned
away, and
when they turned back around there was half a body burned to the bones.
Jonny turned to the wall
and saw Jessie on the floor, and he ran up
next to her. "Jessie, are you okay?" He sat her up as her
eyes slowly
opened.
"What happened?"
"He's dead." Jessie
sighed and put her arms around him. "Thank
God."
She looked down and saw Binx's blood covered body. "Binx."
She let go
of Jonny and crawled on her knees to Binx. Jonny followed her
and sat
on his other side as she rubbed her hands through his hair.
"Is he dead?" She
shook her head and looked at him.
"I don't know Jonny."
"I'm not dead yet."
Binx opened his eyes and smiled at the two. "I
should have known that Jonny would try and save us."
"We're sorry Binx."
She rubbed a tear away from her eye.
"Don't be Jessie.
You two are meant to be and I knew that. I guess
I
was just being selfish. I used to stand outside your window at
night
and watch you sleep. I was filling her head with these romantic
stories, and you wrote them in your computer. I'd hoped that
I could
get you to like the idea of being swept away by me. I guess my
plan
didn't work."
"Is there anything we can
do?" Jessie was almost pleading.
"There's nothing you can
do to save me, but you can save our
people."
"How? I can't do it
without you." He grabbed her hand with his
blood
soaked fingers and turned to Jonny.
"Give me your hand."
Jonny sat his hand in Binx's and Binx put
their
three hands on Jessie's stomach. "With my power and your love,
the
children you have will be more powerful then the whole kingdom."
They closed his eyes and
Jessie could fell a warm wave of power and
love sweep through her. A tear fell as she suddenly also felt
Binx's
pain as his life drained from him and into her and Jonny. His
hand went
limp and it fell onto the ground, and Jessie took in a quick deep
breath. She looked over to Jonny and realized he was crying ,
and she
turned his face with the side of her finger. He leaned down to
her and
pressed his lips on her's as if he was afraid she would leave him again.
"What in the hell just happened?"
Everyone turned to Patty as she
looked around the cave. "Are all of you crazy? There are
two dead
people here."
Jonny stood up and helped
Jessie to do the same. "Let's go home."
They walked past the smoking dead corpse hand in hand into the sunlight.
Patty turned to Hadji.
"What's going on?"
"It's a long story."
She looked him up and down then smiled.
"Hey, thanks for saving
me."
"It was nothing."
She put her arms around him and he sighed.
"Has anyone told you that
you have a real sexy quality about you?"
He
decided to humor her and put his arm on her shoulder.
"You know I'm a king don't
you."
"You don't say. Who
do you rule?"
He laughed at his devilish
prank. "I'm the king of hearts."
"Oh really?" They
walked out of the cave and she kissed his cheek.
"Tell me more."
