His past being a mystery, not much is actually known about this odd boy. He is very cold and acts like a rock most of the time. He once self-destructed his mobile suit so that it wouldn't come into OZ's possession showing how quickly he would die for a mission. Heero also has many battle with Zechs Merquise seemingly fight just to fight most of the time. When the space battleship is about to hit the Earth, however, he goes after it, blowing it to pieces and saving the world. It was then that he seemed to awaken to life's joys, shouting "I will survive" as he shot his gun and blew up the remains of the ship. Heero has a emotional attatchment to Relena and seems to care for her on a deeply personal level. While this may seem insignificant, it is actually a main part in Heero's transformation and refusing to die in his last mission.
Im Endless Waltz, Heero went after Relena when she was kidnapped my Mariemaia. He got through her "supposedly inpenitrable fortress" and finally stopped her war to take over the Earth. In the end, he also pretended to shoot her, ending her evil ways and returning her to a regular girl. At the end of all the fighting, Heero walks off, supposedly waiting for a time when he is needed again.
