GEORGIA, BAGRATION & IMERETINSKY

Note: This page has been extensively updated with assistance from Andrey Frizyuk, who adds this note about names: "The tricky part in account of Georgian families is the spelling of names. Majority of first names exist in three versions: native Georgian, official Russian, and modern Western (English/French). For example: Mikeli (that's Georgian) - Mikhail (that's Russian) - Michael (that's English); Kethevan - Ekaterina - Catherine; Giorgi - Georgy/Yegor - George. I tried to render names of people living in Georgia in Georgian, people associated with Russia - in Russian, and people living in Western Europe - in English. It's even more difficult to choose between three versions of surnames. For example: Muchraneli (Georgian version) - Mukhransky (Russian version) - of Muchrani (English version); Eristavi-Ksaneli - Eristavov-Ksansky - Eristavi of Ksani. When there are only two versions - Russian and Georgian - I normally used the latter: not Dadianov but Dadiani, not Sumbatov but Sumbatashvili, not Kobulov but Kobulashvili, etc. It's also hard to say where to use patronimics: I rendered Russian names with patronimics, and Georgian names - without them.

4c) Alexander (Tbilisi 15 May 1908-Paris 21 Jun 1934); Note: I have received the following communication: "I would like to point out a possible ommision in regard to the entry of the Bagration-Moukhransky  family. I became aware of this omission after having searched through several other genealogical works, including the 1998 edition of the Almanach de Gotha, Stanislav Dumin's "Families of the Nobility", as well as several websites (Paul Theroff's "Online Gotha" among them). The branch of the family which is, to my knowledge, unchronicled descends from Prince Alexander Bagration-Moukhransky, who is listed in several resources as having been born in Tbilisi on 15 May 1907, and having died in Paris on 21 June, 1934. I was told that Alexander Bagration was married in exile sometime in the 1920's to a Russian countess and had a son named Konstantin, who was born either in Paris or in Cap-Ferrat, where they also kept a house. My grandmother, Mrs. Amory Winthrop Burrows (nee Varvara Lodyzhenskya) had known Alexander Bagration and as a child in Paris, and had later his son. By the time my grandmother was married to my grandfather, Konstantin, Alexander's son was married to a Canadian woman, whose name was Olivia Bristow. During this time, the Bagrations spent most of their time in England (they had a house in Belgravia, in London and also a lodge in Scotland), and in the late 1930's or early 1940's, they were befriended by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and had acquired a house in the Bahamas, near Lyford Cay when the duke and duchess were staying in Nassau. My grandparents, who lived in New York had a winter house in Palm Beach, Florida and often told me that Konstantin and Olivia Bagration were guests of theirs, and that they had also stayed at the Bagration's house in Lyford Cay. Both in Palm Beach and in the Bahamas, my grandparents moved in the same circles as the duke and duchess, and were in frequent company of the Bagrations. I suppose my family and the Bagrations must have lost touch over the years, and I never met them. I was however present a party in the 1970's given by Mrs. James Van Alen in Florida at which the Bagration's son, also named Konstantin was present.

At that time, Konstantin was engaged to a member of the Vanderbilt family (to whom I am distantly related), and the two were married in 1978, and had a son, Alexander who was born in London in the early 1980's, I later heard that the two were divorced and that both had been remarried before Konstantin died in the early 1990's. I have never met Alexander, although I was present at the Vanderbilt family reunion in 1995 in Newport, Rhode Island at which he was also present. In addition, a friend from New York recently told me that Alexander Bagration was his son's roommate at school in Switzerland, and that he is now at university in the United States. So Alexander Bagration's great grandson would be about twenty years of age now, and to my knowledge he is the only living member of the family who comes from this line, (There was a daughter born shortly after the son, but she died in the United States).  I am wondering why no current genealogical works have included this line of the family. I have been in contact recently with several genealogists including Guy Stair Sainty, who said that he had no knowledge of Alexander Bagration's descendants. Mr. Sainty reffered me to Dimitry Macedonsky of St. Petersburg, who also had no knowledge of any descendants. Have they been excluded because they are not in the line of succession, or could it simply be that they have chosen not to make their genealogical information public? (Which would naturally be their right today, as private citizens). I wish you the sincerest luck in your efforts, and hope you may be able to offer some insight into this matter. Wintrop Scott Parnell."
