1f) Friedrich II (1379-9 Jun 1454); m.1st ca 1401 Elisabeth Frangepan, dau.of Ct Stepan of Modrus and Veglia. This marriage was designed to end the rivalry between the families. A huge dowry was agreed on; in lieu of cash the Frangepans put up some of their best properties. Then, in about 1414 Friedrich met and eloped with Veronika von Desnic (one historian calls her "the luscious Veronika"); Friedrich left Elisabeth and set up house with Veronika. Both families were furious. Finally, under much pressure, Friedrich returned to Elisabeth in 1422. The morning after Friedrich's first night back, Elisabeth was found murdered in her bed. The Frangepans, furious, attacked Friedrich's lands. Friedrich fled to Hungary, where his sister was queen. He then left there and returned to Slavonia, where he married Veronika. The King of Hungary finally gave in to pressure and sentenced Friedrich to death in absentia; Friedrich was imprisoned by his own father (incidentally saving his life) until 1429. Herman brought Veronika to trial as a witch; found guilty, she was drowned in a fishing pond under the castle of Cilli
