Ambidexterity
What is Ambidexterity?
Ambidexterity is not about being deceptive or hypocritical. Indeed, it is the ability to use both hands with equal ease. Not left-handed, not right-handed. You don’t have a dominant hand – you’re two-handed!
Being ambi is a very cool skill. Think about it. When one of your hands gets tired, you can switch and use your other hand. If, heaven forbid, one of your hands gets chopped off, er…incapacitated, you don’t have to feel helpless for months while you learn to use your other hand with ease. By the by, before I close this paragraph, ambidexterity is not an inborn talent. Perhaps you were born with a dominant right hand but you had to learn to use your right hand to do stuff. In the same way, ambidexterity is a skill learned in life.
HISTORY
The Greeks, being the self-determined people that they are, encouraged ambidexterity. Furthermore, they used the Etruscan alphabet at around 8th century BC. That is, they combined the Phoenician style of writing (right to left) with their own system (left to right). In doing so, the Greeks created a reading and writing system called boustrophedon ('the way the ox turns'), where the lines ran alternately right-to-left and left-to-right. With alternating sweeps of the eyes back and forth, reading was more swift and efficient.
Many famous people are ambidextrous. Take for example, Michelangelo, Einstein, Benjamin Franklin and who can forget – Bill Gates!
How can I become two-handed?
As with everything, practice makes perfect.
If you’re right-handed, use your left hand more by consciously switching when you’re about to do common everyday tasks like pouring a glass of water, picking up a piece of paper, stirring coffee and in other instances when you would usually use your right hand. When putting on a shirt, put your left hand in first. Also, get used to using the muscles of both your hands and arms together. Stir 2 cups of tea simultaneously. Bounce two balls at the same time. Draw with two hands at the same time! You’ll get the hang of it soon enough.
And when you perfect being ambidextrous, feet dexterity anyone? LoL.
