Definition of Wyn
(As opposed to any other
magic-user.)
The title 'Wyn' means that they have taken the same oath of lifelong service to the Light, Uen and the Academy as the Roug have and also have been accepted by the Light into an Y'cha Ceremony, becoming part of a 'Cha-group.
The Source of Wyn Magic
Not much is known about the source of human-based magic. It is known, however, that the talent to wield it is often genetic and that it is not related to the Light magic employed by the unicorns.
Wyn Fields of Magic:
Creative, Destructive, Mind, Illusion.
Constructive magic is the magic of creation. Matter may be created or its form converted, but never destroyed or depleted in any way. Magics include: healing magic, weather magic, flying/levitation, language magic, light magic, etc.
Destructive magic is the magic of destruction. Matter may be destroyed or subtracted from, but never created or added to. Magics include: combusting spells, madness spells, disintegration magic, most death spells, etc.
Mind is (obviously) all in
the mind. It's a very subtle magic, and extremely potent. Telepathy
is nothing compared to what these mages can do. Remember, if you
*believe* you've been hit by a two-ton brick,
you've been hit by a two-ton
brick.
Illusion magic is the magic
of mental trickery. No matter is actually changed in any way, only the
viewers' vision of it. Magics include: invisibility spells, most disguise
spells, any type of illusion projection.
WYN POWERS
Unlike unicorns, Wyn (and all human mages) may have more than one magical power, though most human beings lucky enough to be gifted in magic only have *one* natural talent and so therefore must cultivate the others at the Academy.
A beginning Wyn must choose *one* specific magical talent which he or she chooses to cultivate. The talent may be slightly broader than a unicorn talent, but must start out as either very limited in strength, or *severely* restricted by time, distance, audience (whom it effects), or degree of control.
Not much is known, actually, about the source of human-based magic. It is known, however, that the talent to wield it is often genetic and that it is not related to the Light magic employed by the unicorns. Magic is performed by spoken spell or simply through mental effort (if the talent is natural or very, very well practiced), and taxes its wielder in direct proportion to how powerful the spell is. (i.e. a simple card trick will probably burn about as many calories as a light cough, but a few hours of shooting fireballs at bad guys is going to leave a player pretty wiped out.) It is also known that humans can choose to do only *one* type of magic: constructive, destructive, or illusion. The two simply do not mix, and therefore it is suspected that both types of magicks originate from separate sources.
Manifestations of the Mage-Talented
Mage potential itself cannot
be taught. A mage is born with the potential for magical ability
although it may never manifest. Some mage-talented individuals manifest
before arriving at the Academy and then require help in gaining control
and expertise with their special abilities. Some mage-potentials
manifest while at the Academy, having originally joined hoping to Bond.
This is referred to as 'Turning Wynish' but does not imply
that they are Wyn immediately
that they manifest. A more accurate definition would be 'Turning
Magical', but 'Turning Wynish' is more generally used in common conversation.
On manifesting, they are considered as mage-talented students and their
course of study will probably change dramatically, requiring councelling
from the Academy councellor to help them to determine the right future
path for them.
Mage Paths
The Academy is the central location for the highest order of magical training in the whole of Uen.
There are other trainers and practitioners out in Uen - the majority of whom learned all they know at the Academy. They are registered, highly trusted Academy Mage-Trainers. This is one of the career options for mage-talented trainees at the Academy on graduation.
It is the responsibility of these strategically places Mage-Trainers to recognise and log mage talented youngsters throughout Uen.
They are also there to recognise and report on any potential danger signs of the mage-born, for instance any evil/sociopath tendencies or a likelihood to turn Dark (more on Dark Wyn later). Centrally based all over Uen, they provide a log of all mage talents and can provide Central Academy Operations with information on all key players in the mage community.
They offer basic training
to the mage-talented in control and responsibility of magical abilities.
Ideally the new mage-talented will use their powers to benefit their local
community. This has two benefits. Firstly the talent is controlled
and enabled. Secondly, it has a positive impact on the local community
and increases trust in the populace for Mages and Wyn, breaking down prejudices
and diminishing fears held by the non-talented
regarding mage-talents.
Where a mage-talent wishes for more than this, or where they are highly talented, the Trainer may chose to send the talent to the Academy on recommendation for further or advanced training.
Mage born students come to the Academy from all over Uen and may have different long term goals in mind:
Lower level talents can work in the various villages and cities productively - living pretty normal lives. Medium level talents can work in the government, Royal Academy, commercially, the Csar's palace and so on. Others can take up teaching positions either at the Academy or outside. High talents are can work on magical inventions, research and experimentation, teaching or out in the field etc.
Others may wish to become part of the Wyn Brotherhood. Any level of mage talent can apply to become Wyn. As mentioned in the definition, the title 'Wyn' means that they have taken the same oath of lifelong service to Uen and the Academy as the Roug have and also have been accepted by the Light into an Y'cha Ceremony, becoming part of an Uen Roug Cha-group.
Y'cha - being Accepted by the Light
Students who Bond with unicorns take part in the Y'cha ceremony, which links them in a special Bond to the other members of the Y'cha group who share the same ceremony that moves their First Bond with the unicorns into a Full Bond.
There are also sometimes Wyn members of a Cha-group. The Wyn cannot be involved in the Ceremony while the Bonding is taking place, due to the dangers of conflicting magics but after the successful full Bondings take place, the Wyn-candidates petition to be Accepted by the Light into this Cha-group.
The Wyn candidates are prepared and brought by the Wyn Faculty to the shielded Y'cha Ceremony. The Bonded Students inside do not even see who is attempting to join their Y'cha group - though they may know through friendship who is trying.
Wyn feel unicorn magic as though it is an opposing pole to their own. During the Peaking of the unicorns, the Wyn can feel the peaking magic physically repulsing them.
When petitioners approach the Ceremony of the Y'cha and attempt to enter the building, one of two things can happen. For some, the sense of repulsion grows more and more intense until it is physically impossible for them to get any closer and they must withdraw.
For others, those accepted by the Light into this Y'cha, feel their pole of magic appear to reverse (although no one is really sure that that is what is happening here), so that they are suddenly drawn into the experience of the Bonded students. In that moment, they share the emotional link of the Cha-group and, for the first and perhaps last time, experience the Light magic and the pool of pure unicorn magic. They get a sense of what the Bonded feel and they are included in it, though the experience is different for each mage, just as the Bonding is different for each Bonded pair. In this way, they become part of the 'Cha-group and part of the Uen Roug Family, dedicated to serving the Light and Uen for the rest of their lives. This commitment is confirmed by the Wyn - and their Bonded Cha-mates at a later oath-taking Ceremony, where the Uen Roug and Wyn Creeds are spoken. (Click here to view the creeds.)
The process of the petition is different for every Wyn candidate, experienced on an individual level according to the personality, nature and essence of the person.
As the student councellors
say to these students: "The process to become Accepted by the Light
is different for each person. Many don't enjoy talking about it because
it can be a painful experience. But some have.
They describe having to
face their fears or the loss of their hopes. For some, the experience
is deeply moving. For others, it is an intellectual challenge...."
The Wyn faculty are always standing by to support and comfort those not accepted and to reassure them that perhaps the Light has chosen another Y'cha group for them than this one. The emphasis on support, unity and understanding is highly pronounced between the mage-talented at the Academy.
Dark Wyn
There are mage-borns out
there who don't necessarily use their powers for good, but these are not
necessarily the Dark *Wyn*. They are simply mages gone bad and now
serve as agents to the DQ. The Dark Wyn are a banded group who have
taken the name as an insult and provocation to the Academy Wyn. It
has even been suggested
that they might pretend to be Wyn to perform ill-deeds, undermining the
confidence of the populace in the Uen Roug and planting the idea that the
Academy Wyn *can* turn Dark, undoing years of public relations work and
aiming to sow seeds of distrust between Wyn and Roug. Their goals
are the reverse of the Academy Wyn.
