Maria
Maria grew up in Pallahade, the daughter of a mercenary and a weaver.
From a young age, she took after her father; after almost slicing off her
brother's hand in a mock-battle, her parents quickly realized that she
needed training before she wound up seriously hurting someone. She enrolled
in the Academy at a very young age (just after her seventh birthday), and
excelled in all things warlike; although she was small, she had the lithe
and powerful muscles of an athlete and the grace and dexterity of a dancer.
She did not, however, have the patience of a scholar. She did well with
strategy and tactics, things that held her attention, but was reprimanded
for sleeping through more than one diplomacy class. Magic she finds
interesting, but generally after a few minutes of studying she feels
an itch in her muscles and goes to practice gymnastic routines. She wears
her dark coppery hair in three braids; one over each shoulder and a long
thick braid down her back. Her eyes are strangely dark; by some genetic
quirk the irises are as almost as black as the pupils, giving her an eerie
appearance. In very bright, direct light, her eyes shimmer a dark violet.
Maria has become a proud young woman; she knows that her fighting skills
are unequalled by any in her class and has no false modesty about it, but
she is not vain. Her drive is simple; she is full of energy and knows that
the only way to keep in check is to channel that energy to useful ends.
She spends most of her free time in the gymnasium practicing everything
from society dances to athletic routines to combat moves, but she especially
enjoys the mind/body problems (ways to strengthen and stretch every muscle
of the body with complete mindfulness) she works out with her instructors.
Although she is very friendly with the other students, she often skips
social gatherings in order to try out a new move or spar with an available
partner.
Rambler
Rambler is a born leader and a sort of hero figure at the academy, excelling
at practically everything he tries. Athletic, intelligent, a supreme strategist,
Rambler's favorite pastime is actually exploring the wilds outside of the
Academy - trailblazing, as he calls it - and he has never been known to
back down from any beast that has thought to challenge him. Wild or otherwise.
While fearlessness and selflessness may be his most admirable qualities,
at closer inspection they are also his weak points. Rambler sometimes foregoes
caution for bravado, and it has gotten him into trouble several times.
He also thinks so little of his own safety, that he has not only come very
close to getting himself killed, he also resists his own wants and
desires, causing his individual emotional health to suffer somewhat.
Rambler's talent is that of extreme strength. He can booster his own strength
up to ten times its original state for a period of several hours, but this
is at the cost a day or two of exhaustion.
