Jonas is the son of Kevan, a lazy, dull-witted man, and his mistress, Shayla. Kevan's wife, June, is a barren, bitter woman who was unhappy with her husband's obvious affair. When Shayla had the child, she made Kevan take him, and Jonas had a long, miserable childhood. His father would fluctuate between lower-middle and middle-middle class depending on how lucky he had been that year in his trading, and Jonas never quite knew where he stood. Although he always knew where he stood with his step-mother: she couldn't stand him.

He first showed signs of his wyn ability when June was yelling at him one day and he found himself attuned to her anger in a way he'd never felt. He couldn't do anything with it at the time, but she calmed down more quickly than before. When Jonas was old enough, he left his family for better fortunes, having no real skills and having inherited his father's natural laziness. Jonas wandered to Pallahade and ended up at the Academy only because of a unicorn who reacted to the wyn powers he inadvertantly tapped into. The Roug pair nearly had to drag him to the gates and deposit him there, barely fighting off the effects of his wyn power as he tried to convince them to give in to their frustration and let him go. But he arrived and was given into the hands of Dayle van Gaelen, who recognized the talent right away.

Though he did not want to commit himself to a life of hard work and study, the teachers felt his talent was too strong to let him venture outside the gates with some semblance of control and Dayle was instructed to talk him into staying. It was difficult at first, but Jonas was finally convinced that the Academy was the best place for him, at least for now. He knew he had no money and little hope of earning money beyond his ability, so he decided to stay.

For four years, Jonas adapted to Academy life. Still naturally lazy, he spent a lot of time developing his powers on students who would then volunteer to do his chores for him. He went to all his classes but spent much of his time doodling and worked out only as much as the Armsmaster would let him get away with. He has little respect for MacFinn, thinking him a big, dumb lout who has to rely on his unicorn and his weapon to do anything for him. <g>

Even through all this, it seemed Jonas was going to make it all the way to graduation. He had made friends with the wyn due to his natural charm (his father *was* a salesman!) and with a tiny bit of help from his ability.  Balthazar is one of the few friends he's made without having to convince him magically to be friendly. Jonas is actually very insecure, and has never truly felt liked, wanted, or loved. His family certainly never wanted him around, and once he really found out about his ability, he was never entirely sure if it was what made people be friendly to him. He is a floating soul, not quite sure
where he's going to land.
