Intelligent life besides us? Abso-friggin-lutely!!!!

October 11, 2000

Some people say that we may be the only intelligent life in the universe but in this essay I intend to prove them wrong and I'll do it without resorting to the cliché "Then there's a lot of wasted space." because I feel that trivialises a interesting topic of discussion.

The problem is if you subscribe to a creation as opposed to evolution mind set then go away and stop reading. This essay makes the assumption life evolved, don't worry we will get to that debate in future essays. I won't even try to explain the Drake equation (It's the one that tries to give the exact number of intelligent species in the universe) mostly because I don't understand it not because you couldn't oh brilliant reader you.

See the thing is we are one of billions or at least millions of solar systems in our galaxy, some of the other solar systems have planets others don't, many we haven't explored (Visually of course, since nothing human constructed has left this system in fact it may be impossible all together depending on the existence or nonexistence of an enormous asteroid field that is believed to circle our solar system but I digress.) and we are but one of thousands, millions, or even billions of GALAXIES. This means that there is, probably, trillions upon trillions of solar systems and some people say that just because on the few planets we have "examined" life like us could not exist that it cannot exist anywhere except our beloved little ball of green and blue. I say "examined" because all we've done is look at them through telescopes and then declared that since they were too far away from or too close to their sun life could not exist as if any kind of life we find out there would be at all familiar in thought or appearance or environmental requirements.

The analogy I like, is to say, if you take a ten million sided die and say that for every time you roll a four, life has started on a planet and then matured into a intelligent form of life this will not occur often, but if you roll it hundreds of Trillions of times there is almost definitely going to be more than one success and while it is possible that you might only get one success it is very improbable.

That being said it is very possible that due to the shear size of the universe that we may never encounter them.

Thanks for listening to me blather on and remember They are out there. Feel free to contact me if you want to discuss this essay or anything else about my webpage, my e-mail address is below. Check back soon as we have only scratched the surface of topics that I am willing to yell about at great length.
