hellbound: the chronicles of vincent black
"vincent black" was born - that is, came into existence - late one thursday eve, in the summer, when a few friends and i were loafing around, contemplating nothing in particular and trying to find something better to do than watching anime reruns or playing "metal of horror" (our affectionate title for "medal of honor" on the playstation) with our own li'l deviant music cranked... AGAIN.
an old pal had just returned from his beloved school up north, where - apparently - role-playing runs rampant. guess you gotta love those, um, liberal art colleges. anyways, he proposed (nay, insisted) that we get off our butts and do something different for a change - most particularly, that we take a stab at his newfound love, vampire: the masquerade.
it seemed like a good idea. i mean, we were all pretty creative, certainly open-minded, and we all (well, i may stand mostly alone on this one) had a taste for the darkside, right? but while i had my character idea fairly quickly, griffin k. found himself struggling just a bit with his... so, of course, being the good friends that we were, we volunteered all the ideas we could.
and the rest, as they say, is history.
what we wound up with was a character that was so mismatched, so disjointedly paranoid, so utterly unhinged of reason or logic that he could not be anything other than completely and totally insane. to be honest, we first considered him the "joke" character of the lot. at the time, i had few suspicions that he would later (almost) single-handedly uphold the game, under the guidance of two very twisted players and one very twisted GM.
i owe a great debt of thanks to griffin k., whose bizarre portrayal of the paranoid bounty-hunter / stalker, that lived in the starbuck's "b", got me off my ass and made me break out the pen-n'-paper for some serious hell-raising.
the vince we came to know those nights (we once had a marathon 13-hour game session) helped shape the vincent that lives now, forever, in hell...bound. with a little guidance, griffin's original brand of "wackiness{!!!}" helped give this character the vitality to keep our games alive, and gave me the fuel to create, for him, a world to scream in fear at.
after all, what fun is hell without a paranoid schizophrenic maniac to torture?
{!!!} even though i had never even heard of jhonen vasquez or his comics at the time we played, vince now reminds me of nothing so much as a malformed fusion of johnny the homicidal maniac and a grown-up todd (squee). oh, the wackiness!
vincent black... the man who lives in perpetual fear of his own shadow.
so, there you have it. vincent black: a lunatic born of three very twisted imaginations. he's a danger to your wife, your children... and your pets.
but that just goes to show you, there's a little touch of vince in all of us. a little insanity that takes over sometimes, and makes us strong. oh, it makes us evil, but it makes us strong. and by surrendering to that darkness, sometimes, we keep our little
"being of infinite patience"
at bay.
or so we hope.
message for the clinically insane
