Pelican Lane Theater
Newbury, England

There used to be a popular theatre in Pelican Lane, now long demolished, which was the scene of a murder.

An actor fell in love with his leading lady but, having been spurned by her for another man, he stabbed her in the heart as the curtain went down on their final performance.

After it stopped being used as a theatre the building became a house. In the days before electricity, anyone using a candle to see their way upstairs found it would be blown out, always when they reached the top step. Later, the owners would complain that light bulbs on the stairs always seemed to blow when people were going up to bed.

Another owner once noticed a pool of liquid appear on the ceiling of one of the rooms, even though it had not been a wet day. This grew until it ran all down one wall and onto the floor. When her husband touched the wet stains his hand came away bright red, it was blood. They tried for hours to scrub away the marks but nothing would shift it so they went to bed. When they came down in the morning all traces of it were gone. They couldn't explain this at all except the room in which it had appeared was directly underneath the stage where the actress had been murdered years ago.
