Interviews from January 2003
10 Seconds too Late; Interview done by Chris Monigle
10 seconds too late is a fairly new band from Philadelphia, PA. They were
formed this past summer by Matt Tholey(drums). He and Todd Cericola(lead
vocals, guitar) decided to leave their former band, Drive Faster, to pursue
music that fit them. Matt and Todd recruited ex-Anxiety bassist Bill Craig.
The then three piece began writing songs. They played as a three-piece for a
few months and then added Mike Graziola(guitar) formerly of No Further
Details. The band was now complete. With so many pop-punk bands in todays
world, 10 Seconds Too Late is a step above most of the other bands.
1. Chris: State your name and what you do in the band.
Todd- Vocals, Guitar, Piano
Mike- Guitar, Vocals, Kazoo
Matt- Drums and Drums
Bill- Bass, and Toy Trumpet
2. Chris: What were some of the inspirations when you guys had your
first practice?
10stl: We guess it would be that we wanted to play music because we
really wanted to play something new for ourselves... We actually started out
as an emo band, like really emo, but we changed to be a little bit more
poppy, and ended up liking it so it stuck.
3. Chris: How does the writing process go?
10stl: We usually come into the studio with an idea, we'll basically
write individually and just kind of throw it in together and mesh from
there, we really work as a group, and don't really put a finishing touch on
anything until we're all satisfied.
6. Chris: I play drums and the ladies always want a piece of my sexy
drum skills, I was wondering if Matt had the same problem when it came to
girls.
10stl: Matt usually has a few girls coming up to him after the shows to
talk, we don't really pay attention to Matt because we're all, well Mike and
Todd are always trying to talk to other girls.
5. Chris: What's the deal with the new album?
10stl: Well, we just finished recording it in November, and just finished
the layouts last week for the final product to send out. It features six
songs, and is basically a show of emotions from times in our lives. There's
a different mix of styles on there too, you'll hear emo, punk, there's some
violin work also, so it'll hopefully have you want to hear more.
6. Chris: How has the crowd been reacting to the band?
10stl: Well, we feel as though it's working out... I mean, we usually
don't get a chance to talk to every person. we'd love to hear everybodies
opinion, we love to get feedback, be it good or bad, and we love to talking
to people... especially women.
7. Chris: What's the one song that describes the band the best?
10stl: On the album we'd have to say... Another Heartfelt Song, we're
all a bunch of sappy hopeless romantics, we love watching movies and hoping
cool things like that would happen to us... so anybody interested???? As for
individual songs not on the album... well;
Mike- Hip to be square (huey
lewis and the news) Mike loves to be himself, he's an outgoing guy that just
loves to have a great time, at no cost.
Matt- Cotton Eyed Joe (We have no
clue) Matt is a rousing good time wherever he goes, so he's always goofy and
dancing... he's like the hot cousin at an alabama party.
Bill- Real American
(Hulk Hogan's theme song) Bill is always happy waving the american flag...
he's proud of his heritage, and loves his country.
Todd- New Beginning
(Finch) This kind of sums everything up... Just getting out of a really long
relationship, and finding a new band was hopefully just the beginning,
hopefully the beginning of something good.
8. Chris: are you guys pretty heavy septa riders?
10stl: Nah we're from the outskirts of Philly, so we really don't take
septa much... Mike does ocassionally, but who really cares about mike's
riding habits.
9. Chris: I'm pretty much out of questions, so any closing comments from
the awesome band that is 10 seconds too late?
10stl: We just hope we can have some people that like our music... All we
can really hope for is that... We're out making music now because we love
it... We're doing it to give other people a chance to look into ourselves
and hopefully give us a little bit back... And also remember 10 seconds too
late loves you... everyone else thinks you're a jerk.
David of Simple Plan; Interview done by Ryan Paxton
Most of you know Simple Plan by now, and most punks hate them with a
passion. They are quite popular in the MTV world and have taken it by storm
with their debut LP "No Pads, No Helmets, Just Balls". They have poignant
vocals, catchy guitar riffs and a great fan following. Our own Ryan got a
chance to interview David recently. Enjoy!
1. Was Simple Plan a manufactured product of Atlantic Records?
David: No. In no way were we "manufactured". We all knew how to play our
instruments. I was playing in a band called Reset that was signed to Union
records, and I knew A Simple Plan through some friends. They were looking
for a bassist and I liked some of their stuff I heard so I decided I'd play
for them. From then on, it was like a rocket to the top with them. It was
all so fast.
2.What do you say to those fans that say Simple Plan are sellouts and are
in no way about punk music?
David: I think it's bullshit dude. Who decided what punk music is? We don't come
out saying "hey everyone, check us out, WE'RE PUNK!". So, really I don't
know why kids get the impression we sold out. This was our first release so
how could we sellout? We had nothing to sellout from!
3.How do you guys deal with the huge fame? It started in Canada and
quickly made it's way into MTV. Now you're playing international tours all
across the world with big name bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Blink
182, Green Day. How does a small Montreal band deal with it in such a short
time?
David: Well, it was really weird at first. A while back when we first did the
video for I'm Just A Kid. The week before we were playing a 5 dollar show at
a small club, and the next week were playing in New York City at a sold out
show for 5000 people. We were also on Edgefest, Edgefest 2 and Pop Disaster
Tour lineup, so that had a huge role in getting our name out. We deal with
it like most other bands. We're so grateful for our fans and our followers.
We try to make sure we get back to each one of them (like you) and make sure
we still stay close. I get e-mails from bands all over the world sometimes
asking me to check out their site. Sometimes they don't believe I actually
checked it out.
4.What's in store for the future of Simple Plan?
David: We're going to be recording in the Spring. We're constantly on tour still
in support of No Pads, so we've been writing music on the bus and everything.
The next albums going to be more rock driven, as we're all getting
constantly influenced by different bands. It's expected to be out next fall
or winter.
5.One last question. Do you have any regrets leaving Reset? Of course,
you were big in Quebec with many videos on Musiqueplus and a deal with Union
label.
David: No regrets. We're all friends. I just picked a different road and god
blessed me with Simple Plan.
Ryan: Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions and help the
zine.
David: No problem, it was my pleasure! Good luck.
