Since the release of the first Matrix
movie in 1999, many individuals have expressed their personal ideas about
religious undertones throughout the script. Religious reflections among
Christians, Gnostics, and even
Buddhists have all been analyzed, with many different views being discussed.
This site will focus mainly on the Christian similarities of Keanu
Reeves’s character Neo as the Christian Messiah. For the purposes of this
page, only the Christian faith will be interpreted and contrasted with the
movies (The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions).
Many different opinions about the Matrix Trilogy have
been debated from both devout Christians and skeptical Atheists. The religious
comparisons brought up in this website will be analyzed from an objective point
of view, with a neutral stance and minimal interpretation being taken by
myself. I feel this is necessary to do, as I am an Atheist and do
not know enough about Christianity to form strong views either for or against
and the meanings implied in the context of the movies. Granted, there are
explicit religious symbols throughout the Trilogy, as even the Wachowski
brothers, the writers and directors of all three movies, admit. These Christian
symbols and genuine parallels will be highlighted and will hopefully allow for
the reader to decide for themselves about the implicit undertones of the movies.
