Chapter 8

"It needs more flour." – Claire

"What it needs is more sugar." – Lance. Claire and Lance had flour on their faces and the aprons they were wearing sported the cooking ingredient also.

"Well go get some more flour and sugar in the back and I’ll see if I can’t get this stuff to thicken." – Claire

"But I thought it was too thick." – Lance

"Just go get the stuff." – Claire. Lance turned around and walked into the back room that contained different foods, spices and things like that.

"I don’t see any of it." Lance yelled from the room.

"It’s right there." Claire yelled back.

"Well I don’t see it." – Lance. Claire put the spoon down and walked into the pantry. Her dog followed her. Claire went over to Lance and surveyed the shelves. Dodger poked his head behind the door and pushed. The door slammed shut. Dodger sniffed around the trashcan that was behind the now closed door.

"What’s this?" Claire held up two bags marked sugar and the other flour.

"Well excuse me. It’s not my fault it was behind a bunch of stuff." – Lance. Claire exhaled hard and pushed the bags into his arms. Claire walked over to the door and turned the knob. It wouldn’t budge.

"I think we have a problem." – Claire

"Oh no. " – Lance. He placed the bags on a table that was in the room. Claire yanked on the door and it still wouldn’t open. Then Lance tried and the doorknob ripped out of the door.

"Nice one." – Claire. The dog whimpered and lay down in the corner. Lance blew out through his mouth. "Well isn’t this like every movie you’ve ever seen." - Claire

"Oh man." – Lance

"And everyone’s at the park and they won’t be back till around 10:00. Oh brother, we’re gonna be stuck for like 2 and a half hours." – Claire. Lance buried his face in his hands. Claire looked over her shoulder at him. "Well this isn’t exactly a picnic for me either." – Claire. Lance stood up.

"This is your stupid dog’s fault!" – Lance. Dodger lifted up his head.

"No it’s not, it’s Lacey’s fault for making me make the stupid cake to begin with. I don’t even know how to cook!" – Claire

"But I thought you said you knew what you were doing?" – Lance

"So I lied." – Claire. Lance sat back down.

"Well it’s not the first time." – Lance

"What’s that supposed to mean?" – Claire

"Just forget it." – Lance

"This has to do with JC doesn’t it? Well buster let me tell you something. You thing that life has been a bitch for you but it certainly hasn’t been Pleasantville for me either. You have no idea how much I’ve gone through. " – Claire

"Why did you lie to me. You could have just said that you liked JC." – Lance

"But I don’t like JC." – Claire. Lance’s eyes widened in surprise.

"Well you could have fooled me." – Lance

"I did." – Claire

"I don’t get you." – Lance

"Take a number." – Claire. It fell silent for a few moments.

"So are you going to tell me what the hell is going on or are we not going to talk to each other for the rest of our lives?" – Lance

"You wouldn’t understand even if I tried." – Claire

"Well try cause I got nothing else to do right now." – Lance. Claire sighed and sat down against the wall.

"Well before I met you guys I was seeing this guy named Drew." Lance’s face lit up. "I had been seeing him for about 3 years. He started sleeping at my house and eating the food I bought. Soon I started running out of money. Then I met you guys. I found myself away from home more and staying later at work. I cam home later one night and found Drew sitting on the couch and the house was a mess. I went in the bedroom and the sheets were messed up as well. So I figured the bathroom would be a mess too so I went in there to clean it up. When I went to throw something away I notice something in the trash." Claire paused and breathed heavily.

"Well what was it?" – Lance

"It was a condom Lance, a used condom. " – Claire

"Yea so. Maybe he found it in the bedroom." – Lance

"Lance I’m a virgin. I do not allow condoms in my house. I thought I made that clear to him. I didn’t want to deal with that till I was married." – Claire

"Oh," Lance, "I thought- "

"I know what you thought. Anyway I told him I didn’t want to see him ever again and that was the end of it." – Claire

"Why didn't you just tell me?" – Lance

"The last thing I wanted was for anyone to feel sorry for me. Plus with all that was happening between me you and JC I was as lost as ever. I didn’t want to say ‘ oh my boyfriend cheated on me and now I’m free. Feel sorry for me and fall in love with me.’ Plus it’s not the easiest thing in the world just to forget a two year relationship." – Claire

"Well I don’t know what to say. I’ve been acting like an idiot. Claire I’m sorry." – Lance

"Don’t be. It’s not your fault Drew turned out to be a two-faced jerk." – Claire

"What was Drew ’s last name?" – Lance

"Collins." – Claire

"Oh my god, you dated him? " – Lance

"You know him?" – Claire

"I used to live next to him when I was younger." – Lance

"Well maybe I fell in love with the wrong neighbor." – Claire. Lance looked at Claire wide eyed. She was staring at her feet expressionless. Claire looked out the window. She could see the fireworks in the distance. Dodger came and sat down next to Claire.

"So how are we going to get out of here?" – Lance. Claire stood up and walked to the window. Outside you could see the backyard.
