In the news today, Bush wants to make peace in the Middle East.
This is aether a cover move/political posturing, or somebody does not know his history. The region has seen frequent and bloody conflict for thousands of years. No effort to impose democracy will solve the problems there. Peace only happens when the individuals involved want peace to break out. The general populace need to recognize that suicide bombing is not a legitimate way to express viewpoints. And all those who cry for peace but are unwilling to make damn sure their neighbors are not terrorists need to wake up and realize that their inaction makes the situation so much worse.
Free trade would probably help a whole lot. It is hard to think about being a martyr for your violent faith when you are watching MTV. As much as consumerism can be a defect of character, a bunch of rag-heads would be much better off if they would do nice stuff like working hard to buy a bigger TV and a new SUV. Tight jeans would be a great fashion upgrade from burquas and veils.

Before long it must be realized that some people want you dead because of who you are. The mere act of living a peaceable productive life in a more or less free country/economy is enough to get a lot of people hating you. These may be people who are envious of what you have, or, more likely, they just don't think that your chosen lifestyle is right. One such group are any Muslims who happen to take their happy peaceful religion seriously.

Now this does not apply to all Muslims. Only those who think the Koran is the word of Allah and must be obeyed. This book instructs its readers to kill the infidels who live near them. And to kill unbelievers wherever they may be found.

Think about common law for a moment. If some one stated his intent to commit murder and had the ability to carry out that intent, that would be a criminal act. Now how does this example differ from a group who require themselves to hold that their deity commands murder in the present tense hear and now?

Ratio (Lt) of this blog
This forum is primarily for my own entertainment.
Other than that, there will will be discussions of liberty in the light of economics, politics, , history, and whatever else comes to mind.

Violence is not a solution to long term problems. Rather, people must want the solution to a problem. Freedom, political and otherwise, can only be reached by changing the way individuals think about and relate to the world of their experience.
The only true way for liberty to come about is for a critical mass of people to begin acting as if they were free. Not by protesting, nor by political action, but simply by acting as if they were not in bondage. Learn to the chains and they must eventually go away. Tell a lie often enough and it will become the truth.

Fear
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: useless fear
i must not fear. fear is the mind-killer. fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. i will face my fear. i will permit it to pass over me and through me. and when it has gone past, i will turn the inner eye to see its path. where the fear has gone there will be nothing. only i will remain.

this quote from DUNE is great. i would add that fear is an alarm signal of danger. thus the fear should lead to action that resolves the situation, or, when that is not possible, the fear should slip away because the alarm is not doing any good and it tends to be obnoxious.
