The top five causes of fatal unintentional injuries include: falls, fires and burns, poisoning, drowning, and motor vehicle crashes.

Every 83 seconds there is a house fire. Approx. 3,377 people died in home fires in 2000.

Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death in children before the age of 21.

In 2000 there were: 254,870 (reported) sexual assaults nation wide.

Childhood falls account for one-third of all fall-related emergency visits each year. One in every three adults age 65 and older falls each year. Falls are the leading cause of injury death in persons over the age of 65.

1,200,000 new and recurrent cases of coronary attacks occur per year; 42 percent (504,000) die. Cardiovascular disease is #1 killer of women.

Strokes kill an estimated 167,000 Americans each year and are the leading cause of adult disability.

The most common causes of injuries seen in emergency departments are from falls, violence and traffic accidents.

Unintentional injuries continue to be the fifth leading cause of death overall, exceeded only by heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Unintentional injuries rank third in importance behind cancer and heart disease.

Approximately 4.7 million people each year are bitten by dogs, with 800,000 bites requiring medical attention.

In 2000, nearly 373,000 children ages 14 and under were treated in the US for bicycle-related injuries and 173 died from this type of injury in 1999.

More than 4,400 people drowned in 1998.

Approximately 1,800 children, ages 14 and under, are treated annually in hospital emergency rooms for unintentional firearm-related injuries. 88 children died n 1999 from gun shots.
