Contra Shattered Soldier

Rating = 8.9/10

First thing you might consider doing before starting this game: strap the dual shock 2 to your hands with some tape...this will help prevent you from throwing the controller or performing similar display of rage. Contra: Shattered Soldier is one hard game is an understatement, you'll probably die...a lot before you figure out the patterns of the levels and bosses. But hey, for us diehard fans: "the harder you work for something, the better it is when you finish it". Shattered Soldier marks the return of true Contra greatness since Contra: Aliens War on the SNES. The game is side scrolling 2D, but the graphics is so good, you'll get the feeling it's 3D sometimes, thus I think of it as 2.5D (think Einhander with better graphics). Gameplay? This department Contra delivers. Frantic action is provided nonstop throughout EVERY LEVEL. Bosses are huge and intimidating, displayed with brilliant graphics. The music is the best I've ever heard in a contra game, including the tightest metal bass and pumping techno in the right moments. The weapons, Contra's specialty, is brilliantly produced. There are 3 different weapons, each with 2 fire mode, make for a very diverse playing style. However, there is no spread gun (gulp). Basically, what you look for in a classic Contra game is here, and improved. Contra does have its flaws, however, that prevent it from getting a 5. The game is short, what take up most of the time is restarting after dying. Also, if you want to beat it, you'll have to do it in one sitting...that's right, still no progress saving. This is one area I would like to see changed in Contra games (or maybe this is intended so that the makers don't have to work as much and produce a longer game!). Is this a rental? It depends on who's playing. Hardcore, oldschool Contra fans will be able to beat it within a week. Newbees...maybe not, unless you devote all your waking hours into playing it...One final word, Contra delivers the best satisfaction if you are willing to stick with the wild ride....classic gaming.
