The Hippoiathanatoi were the majestic immortal horses of the gods. The majority of these divine steeds were the offspring of the four Wind-Gods who themselves were said to draw the chariot of Zeus in the shape of horses.

These immortal horses were occasionally granted as gifts to mortals. These animals, however, are not meant for mortal mastery--something demonstrated when Apollo's mortal son Phaethon attempts to drive the team across the sky. Unable to control them, he scorches the earth.
