And there was the commuter on the train who was looking everywhere for his tickets - in his pants pocket, his jacket, his wallet. He was searching with great frenzy, much to the amusement of the other passangers, who could see that he had the ticket in his mouth. The conductor snatched the snip of paper, punched it and gave it back. When he moved on, the commuter's companion said, "I bet you feel pretty stupid sitting there looking everywhere for your ticket when it was right in your mouth all the time."
"Stupid?" replied the commuter, "I was chewing the date off!"

By Edward de Bono, quoted by Steward McBride in the Christian Sciene Monitor in the Reader's Digest, February, 1983.

Climate and Weather

Indonesia's climate and weather is charecterized by an equatorial double rainy season. Its variation caused by the equatorial circulation (Walker Circulation) and the meridien circulation (Hardley Circulation). The displacement of the latter circulation is closely related to the north -south movement of the sun and its position at certain period wiyh regard to the earth and the continents of Asia and Australia. These factor contribute to the displacement and intensity of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITZC) being an equatorial through of low pressure. This charecterises the weather of Indonesia, while the prevalence of the west monsoon and the east mosoon (the rainy and dry seasons) are charecterising Indonesia's climate.

Main Seasons

The climate of Indonesia changes every six months i.e. : the dry season (June to September) is influenced by the Australian continental air masses and the rainy season (December to March) is influenced by the Asian continental and Pacific ocean air masses passing over oceans. The air contains vapour and bring rain to fall on Indonesia. Tropical areas have rainy seasons almost the whole year. The climate of Central Maluku is on the controry to other indonesian areas. The rainy season is from June to September and the dry season from December to March. The transitional periods between the two seasons are April to May and October to November.

Temperatur and Humidity

Indonesia consists of thousands of island and mountains. The temperature in Indonesia can be classified as follow :

  • An average temperture for beach places is usually 270C.
  • An average temperature of 250C for inland and mountain areas.
  • An average temperature of 220 for mountain places (depending on the height of the mountain).

As tropical zone Indonesian islands have an average relative humidity at interval of 75%-85%, with a maximum and minimum of humidity of 100% and 50%.

Volcanoes

The country is predominantly mountainous. There are about 400 volcanoes, of which 100 are active. Mountains higher than 9000 feet are found on the island of Sumatra, such as : Mt. Leuser and Mt. Kerinci. On Java island are : the Mt. Gede, Mt. Tangkuban Perahu, Mt. Pangrango, Mt. Kawi, Mt. Kelud, Mt. Semeru, Mt. Raung.
