The Beginner's Guide To Fish Keeping.
How to find the Weight of Your Aquarium
By: Maverick
You can estimate a filled tank to be between 10-12lbs per gallon. However, what your tank says it will hold may not be the truth, for example, a typical 20-gallon high, only holds 19.9 gallons.
To find out the true amount your tank will hold use the following equation:
W X D X H/231=true measurement
Lets use that 20 gal. to demonstrate:
The dimensions of that tank are:
24” in Width, 12” in depth, and 16” in height.
24 X 12 X 16 = 4,608, now divide 4,608 by 231. You get 19.948051948. That rounds to 20 gallons, but isn’t exactly. Not all tanks will come out this nicely; many will be several gallons more or less than what they claim to be.
Now that you know how many gallons are in your tank, take that number and multiply by 12 (over estimating is better than underestimating in this case). Our 20 gallon weighs 239.4 lbs. This number helps take into account the weight of equipment, gravel and decorations as well as water. Water only weighs about 8.34 lbs per gallon. If you multiplied that by 20, you would only get 166.8 lbs. A little short of the truth, don't you think?
