The Beginner's Guide To Fish Keeping.

Choosing a Stand for Your Aquarium
By: Maverick

Aquariums stands come in different designs, like anything else. Iron stands are available to smaller tanks, these are fairly sturdy and offer a shelf on the bottom to store things or put a second tank. Your other stand design is typically wood, offers a nice flat bottom to distribute weight, cabinets to store equipment or sumps, and offer high aesthetic appeal.
Stands serve several practical purposes. Formost, they supply your tank with a sturdy level base, at eye level. Of course, you do not have to buy a stand made for an aquarium, you MAY have a peice of furniture that could serve as a safe stand. Below is a list of requirments your stand needs to safely hold your aquarium.
  • A flat bottom (to distribute weight and reduce stress on stand)
  • Must be very strong and built for the purpose of having alot of weight on top of it. If your not sure if it's strong enough, or if it wobbles, don't use it.
  • Must be level
  • NOT top heavy. A short wide stand is safer that a tall shallow one. If you use a stand that is 12" deep or less, secure it to the wall.
  • Make sure your stand can hold the required amount of weight. Remember, about 12 lbs per gallon. A 20 gallon tank can weigh over 200 lbs.
Those were just a few things you need to look for. Paying attention to small things can reduce alot of worry later on.
