The Altitude

* An altitude is the perpendicular distance from a vertex to the opposite side.

* Like the perpendicular bisector, the altitude also meets the opposite side at a 90 degree angle. However, the altitude does not necessarily divide the opposite side into two equal halves.

Remember: The perpendicular bisector travels through the midpoint of the opposite side, but does not necessarily travel through the vertex.
The altitude travels through the vertex, but not necessarily through the midpoint of the opposite side.

Confusing, but with practice it should be easy to remember.

* The orthocentre can be determined by finding the equations of two of the altitude lines and then finding the point of intersection of those two lines using elimination or substitution.

*The orthocentre is the place where all three altitudes intersect on a triangle.
