Carlos M. DeGuzman

Hospital Corpsman Chief Petty Officer

(Fleet Marine Force), U.S. Navy

Chief DeGuzman was born in the Philippines on November 16, 1957. Attended Santa Barbara Elementary School in 1965 & Attended private school in Mary Help of Christians Minor Seminary (MHCS). After graduating from high school in 1975, he attended Immaculate Conception Major Seminary for two years  and then immigrated to the United States in February 19, 1979 & joined the U.S. Navy in February 6,  1980 at Military Enlisted Processing Station, Boston, Massachussettes.  He attended basic and seaman apprentice training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Florida, then attended Hospital Corps “A” School, San Diego.  Upon graduation, he went to Camp Johnson, North Carolina for Field Medical Service School & earned the Navy Enlisted Classification “8404” (Field Medical Service Technician), after graduation he transferred to Naval Regional Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia, where he worked as Ward Corpsman and Central Supply Room Technician.  He was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class.

In July 1983, his original orders to Camp LeJeune, 2nd Marine Division, North Carolina was modified to 1st  Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California.  His first sea tour was a six months deployment to Okinawa, Japan with 2nd Battalion, ninth Marines where he participated in a number of Marine Corps field training exercises.  During this time, he was assigned to 13th Area Branch Medical Clinic as General Duty HM-0000 and was promoted to Petty Officer Second Class.  He later transferred to Naval Hospital, Long Beach in 1985 where he worked as the Leading Petty Officer for Patient Administration Department. He completed his Associates Degree General Studies in 1985, & in 1989 he received his Bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration. He got married to Maria Lourdes Cayabyab in January 19, 1985. His son Bryan was born in September 12, 1985. He became a naturalized United States citizen in April 27, 1987. His daughter Karen was born in December 28, 1988 he was promoted to First Class Petty Officer in July 1989.

In August 1989, he took orders for a one year unaccompanied tour to 3rd Force Service Support Group, Okinawa, Japan where he was assigned with 3rd Medical Batallion, where he was the Ledaing Petty Officer for Delta Company, Command Training Unit, he was later handpicked by the commanding officer to be the Senior Medical Departmental Representative for Alpha Company, 9th Engineers Battalion for a six months deployment to Naval Base Station, Subic Bay, Philippines.  

In July 1991, he transferred to Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, where he was assigned to Personnel office, managing personnel records to Sailors and Marines deployed to Desert Shield /Storm. During this time Chief Deguzman was initiated to the greatest chief’s and promoted to his present rank.

Chief Deguzman was transferred to 1st Medical Battalion, where he was assigned as the Professional Services Chief, led Alpha Company to Somalia on Operation Restore Hope and was later re-assigned as the Chief for the 22 Area Branch Medical Clinic. He volunteered as the 15th  Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU 15)chief, participated in Kernel Raider, Kernel Blitz exercises, deployed six months WESTPAC onboard USS Cleveland (LPD7) in June 1992. After the deployment he later transferred to Headquarters Battalion as the Medical Chief until his transfer to Twentynine Palms, Ca.

1995-1998, Leading Chief for Nursing Services leading and managing about 110 Enlisted personnel and later re-assigned to Ancillary Services.  Chairman of Asian Pacific American Heritage, where he received a Letter of Commendation from the Commanding General for successful Asian Pacific celebration. He completed his graduate studies in 1998 and earned Master’s Degree in Management. 

In October 1998, Hospital Corpsman Chief Deguzman transferred overseas to U.S. Naval Hospital, Rota, Spain.  He took over initially as Leading Chief Petty Officer, Medical Supply Department then accepted reassignment to become Leading Chief, Medical Services Directorate the largest directorate with about sixty five Medical Personnel. He was the Watchbill Coordinator for training and supervising eighty five Sailors & all Enlisted personnel assigned to the Naval Hospital for three years.

In January 6, 2002 Chief Deguzman transferred to the Robert E. Bush, Naval Hospital, Twentynine Palms, California where he is assigned as the Chief Master at Arms and assistant Department Head of the Operating Management Department.
 

Chief Deguzman personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal & Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and Navy Good Conduct Medals (6th award).  His professional affiliations include membership in the American College of Health Care Executive & Southern Illinois University Alumni Association. 

Chief Deguzman, his wife Lourdes, son Bryan, and daughter Karen live in Moreno Valley county of Riverside, California.
