Did you know that Martin Luther King worked in the Tobacco fields here in Connecticut? So did West Indians. They immigrated to America in the 1940s and 50s. A few weeks ago I visited the Tobacco Museum, which is located in Windsor Connecticut. I learned from going to the Tobacco Museum that some people who immigrated to America, would mostly work in the tobacco fields. Tobacco has been part of the agricultural economy of America since the early 1600's. Working in the tobacco fields took a lot of time, patience, and hard work. You would have to wake up early in the morning, sometimes around 5:00 am and finish 3:00 pm. Men, women, boys, and girls worked in the tobacco fields. The youngest age for boys and girls was 14. There were many stages in order to complete the work of tobacco.

When working with tobacco the plants were very hard to deal with, because they were so big and it would become and get so hot. Manufacturers sold cigars in the unmarked bundles. Selling them that way would become easier, although it took a lot of work.

After the war, congress passed the law that stated, cigars would have to be packaged and sold in wooden boxes. That would have to be a specific size. They had to be identified with numbers, and there tax information stamped on them. Traditionally cigars were made from soft, pilable, woods such as whitewood, poplar, or cedar. Mrs. Prout of Windsor Connecticut made the first cigar. Tobacco shade plants have 18 to 24 usable leaves per plant. But early varieties had fewer leaves which were able to be topped like broad leafs but presently tops remain on the plant. But six weeks after the seedling it would be transplanted.

After visiting the Tobacco Museum we visited the Connecticut Historical Society, which is located in Hartford Connecticut. What I learned is that many of our West Indian people came to America to start a new life and have a good job but, it wasn't all going to happen right at the moment. West Indians had to work hard and earn what it is that they would need in order to become successful. Working in America wasn't all that the West Indians thought they were going to do. West Indians came into a new environment and they built themselves up by trying to meet people and see how the America brought there types of culture.
