NEWS!!!!!
A total amount of $2089.60 was collected from the money sponsored and handed over to the Canadian Cancer Society on September 3rd, 2003.

Bike Ride For Cancer Research

On August 9th, 2003 my roomate Donald Rowat and I cycled from the intersection of Highways #7 and #417 just west of Ottawa to a distance of 15 kilometers past Kaladar, Ontario, a distance of 154 km. The following morning, i awoke bright and early to finish off with another 30 Kilometers of cycling along highway #7 in order to fullfill my commitment of 183 km.

In the left map you can see my starting point. The path taken along highway seven and the finishing point can be seen in the map on the right.
The purpose of this bike trip was to raise money for cancer research, under the endorsement of the Canadian Cancer Society (www.cancer.ca). All monies will be donated to the cancer society at the end of fundraising. The trip was dedicated to my father, a 13 year cancer survivor.

My original goal was to raise $1000, however due to the amazing response from everyone that I know this goal was reached rather quickly. Continue reading the story of our trip and the fundraising that took place.

Special Thanks!

I would like to extend the greatest of special thanks to everyone who donated, helped out, supported and was involved in this endevour. A tremendous amount of response was recieved by this fundraising campaign and I have many friends and family members to thank for that. Word-of-mouth was very important in spreading the word of this trip.

I would like to thank Dana Buck for driving us to our starting point on Highway #7, Don Rowat for joing me on this trip and for putting his body and mind through such rigours over such a long distance, my father, and Bob Rodine, for raising such a large amount of money himself as well as for accomadating our travelling needs during the weekend. A huge special thanks goes out to Pam Matthews who has helped me out with any needs I had during the planning process of this trip as well as supporting me throughout it. Thanks Beautiful.

THE STORY OF OUR ADVENTURE

Saturday morning we started off a little late in the day. It was our plan to begin biking around 6:30 am, however due to a few drawbacks and time delays we were on the road and ready to go for 7:30. Unfortunately, 20 minutes and 10 Km into the trip the bearing on my rear wheel decided to disintegrate. After evaluating the situation we continued on and stopped in Carleton Place at the Canadian Tire in order to fetch some repair parts, however nothing of the sort was found. This particular Canadian Tire contracts out all of their bicycle repairs to a local shop. The manager Ken was nice enough to have one of the sporting goods guys drive me over to the shop at 9 am and get the wheel fixed. But once again we were delayed as the shop did not open until 10 am. Don and I waited till then in front of the Canadian Tire when I was once again driven over to the store, Beckwiths Bicycles. The staff here fixed my bike within minutes and accepted no charge for their services or parts. An amazing display of kindness in our situation by both Canadian Tire and Beckwiths.

Once again on our way, Don and I continued cycling stopping for a small bite to eat in Perth.

Slowly but surely we came to realize that the trip from Ottawa to my parents house had be calculated wrongly in the car Odometer and was not 183 km, but in fact more closely situated at 215 km.

We stopped in Kaladar for a stretch and hydration session and called my parents to let them know where we were. It had appeared to be around 5:00 pm, the both of us exhausted and tremendously sore and a thunder storm taunting us in the background. After a few minutes of deliberation it was decided that we would have my father meet us on the highway and call it quits for the day. On Saturday, August 9th, 2003, Don Rowat and myself cycled 154 km along highway #7 in the name of Cancer.

The following morning I awoke promptly and finished the remaining 30 Km along Highway #7 in order to fullfill my commitment to those that donated and supported this fundraiser........getting a flat tire in the remaining 2 km of the distance. :)

The total trip distance was 183.19 km in 7 hours, 42 minutes and 39 seconds of biking, at an average speed of 23.7 km/hour and a max speed of 43.5 km/hour.
