One of these new discoveries shows differences in the perfin, raising the question of possible forgery or the existence of two machines. (see also 4154)

The perfin was used by Union Steamship Company, who were involved with the expedition. (see also 4128)

The perforator was constructed for New South Wales stamps, but after stamp formats changed, dies 8 to 12 were rarely used.

These appear to be from the same machine, which was used in the UK before 1890 (O0960.01).

It is now thought that Dies I and II were both multiheaded perforators. The type 14 fake seems to be made from a reversed die, so although perforated from the front it shows as reversed when viewed face up.

The circular states that "for users of small quantities any single initial can be perforated on stamps of the value of one pound while waiting at the office", indicating that single letter dies could have many users. Perfins on U.S. Revenue stamps are a large, generally disregarded, field. They have an added complication compared with postal perfins in that perforating was a widely used method of cancelling the stamps once they were affixed to the tax form so that stamps can be found with a true perfin to prevent pilfering, plus a perforated cancellation.

Ultimately no names are mentioned, but the trade association did accept that the forgeries existed.

M.London Philatelist, Dec 1962, Vol. 71, p.196-7.A dubious O.U.S. underprint is illustrated on a SG 36 penny perf 16 watermark large crown, which was obsolete by the time the official O.U.S. underprints were first produced. This shows extra wavy lines, one parallel and the other perpendicular to the normal underprint. Also, an example of the overprint on piece dates 24 Nov 1858 is illustrated. This overprint predates the supposed date of issue of 18 Apr 1859.

Smith, from information in the De La Rue archives. Although the underprint is only known on line engraved stamps, records show that on 15 Jan 1868 two overprinting formes were created, one for 4d stamps and the other for 3d, 6d, 9d, 10d, 1/- and 2/- values.

A block of four is illustrated.
