Three Weeks Until The Wedding
"Lita!" Hunter knocked on the hotel room door. "Come on baby, let me in."
The door opened slowly and Edge and Raven slipped out. They both glared at him. "If she's more distressed when you leave than she is now, then we will hurt you."
"And when we've finished with you." added Raven. "We'll hand you over to Helms and Jeff."
"Guys, I appreciate the fact that this past week hasn't been easy for you and I'm really sorry about that." Hunter replied tiredly. "But this hasn't been an easy week for me either. I found out something and didn't react too well."
"We know." Edge and Raven replied in unison. Hunter looked at them for a minute and nodded, then pushed open the door to the hotel room. What he saw surprised him.
Lita was staring out the window, her arms around her knees which had been drawn up to her chin. She was dressed casually, in faded jeans and an old t-shirt, hair in two plaits and no make up. Her eyes were red and it was obvious she'd been on a heavy crying jag. But what shocked Hunter most was the look of pure apathy on his girlfriend's face.
"Lita..." He stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. She looked up at Hunter as he crossed the room and knelt next to her. "What the do you want?"
"Are you okay?" Hunter mentally kicked himself as soon as the words were out of his mouth. "Stupid question, even for me. I know I over reacted. I was just hurt that Chy hadn't bothered to let me know and I shot the messenger, so to speak."
"You reacted like a jealous husband." Lita replied blankly, staring back out the window. "To the point that I couldn't help thinking that maybe, just maybe, you still love her and I've just been a distraction until you can get her back."
"Babydoll, believe me that's not true." Hunter reached out to stroke her hair, but she flinched away from him. "Lita, please..."
"Please what Hunter?" She snapped, looking down at him. "It took you a week to bother coming after me. You could have at least been a man about it and done this sooner. I deserve that much at least."
"I didn't come after you sooner, because I needed to get my head straight. I had to work through all this shit in my head so that I could tell you exactly what I feel." Hunter hesitated. "I'm angry with Chyna. I wish she'd told me that she knows where Stephanie is. The only reason I care where Stephanie's been hiding out the last year is so that I can contact her somehow and get a divorce. Hell, I don't even care where she is. Just somewhere I could send her divorce papers."
"Why would you want to that Hunter?" Lita asked bitterly. "I mean, this way you get a girlfriend and not have to worry about her wanting you to commit because you can just hide behind your wedding ring."
"What's with the assuming that I don't want to commit to you?" He replied. "Just because Helms couldn't do it -"
"Leave him out of this! Besides, you've got history working against you."
"Oh is that all you have left? The cheap shots? In that case, say what you need to say and get it out of your system. Then let me defend myself and say what I came here to say. Deal?" Hunter said gently. Lita looked up at him and shrugged. "I have nothing more I want to say to you."
Very tenderly, Hunter picked her up from the chair and carried her over to the bed, settling Lita on his lap as he sat down on the bed. "The reason I never proposed to Chyna is because I couldn't imagine myself growing old with her. I mean, I can see us in 50 years, having wheelchair races, cheating at bingo and trying to beat each other up with walking sticks, but not as a couple. When you think about it, you'll probably see that's why Helms never popped the question. Personally, I'm glad he didn't, his loss is my gain."
"I would've come earlier, but I need to get my head straight. I didn't want to find you and try and work things out when we were both feeling raw and emotional. That would have just ended horribly. The only reason I care about Stephanie is so I can finally get out of a marriage that was a mistake in the first place. Lita, I love you. Heart, mind, body and soul, I'm yours."
"I love you too Hunter, I really do. There's nobody else for me. It never bothered me that legally you belonged to Stephanie, cause I knew that in here," She placed her hand on his heart. "You belonged to me. But things change."
"What's changed?" He asked, with a slight frown. Lita smiled, a little sadly. "I didn't want to say anything until I was certain, but then I remembered that you'd been burnt in this area before so I decided that I'd take you to the doctors with me."
"What exactly are you saying babydoll?" Hunter felt a stirring of excitement as the potential meaning of Lita's words sunk. She kept talking as though he hadn't spoken. "This week I was just so fucking miserable that I couldn't bear to go. Now I think that's a good thing, because I want you to be there."
"Damnit honey, will you just tell me what's going on?"
She kissed him on the cheek. "I don't know definitely yet, but I'm fairly sure that I'm pregnant."
