Wrestlemania 16
"Well that was 15 minutes of my life I'm never going to get back again." Integra muttered, bouncing Jason on her knee. Lydia patted her on the shoulder. "Soon enough. Personally, I thought that match rocked."
"Where the hell did Thrasher get that dress?" asked Edge with a grin. "It looks like some of the tacky goth dresses Lyd would've worn while she was pregnant."
This statement was meet with silence and a cold glare from Lydia. Hiding a smirk, Chris nudged Edge. "Um.. I think that was one of the dresses Lydia wore while pregnant."
"How would you know?" Edge asked, crossing his arms defensively. Integra pointed at Lydia. Edge followed his fiancee's finger. "Oh. Um.. I love you Lydia."
"No you don't." She replied without smiling. "It's just that there's nobody else who puts up with your shit like I do."
"That's why I love you!" He replied with a charming grin. Lydia looked at him, then cracked up laughing. "Gotcha!"
"Argh! You bitch!" He glared at her. She kept laughing. "Well, that's what you get for insulting my dress sense."
"Speaking of dress sense, did you hear Miss Plastic Fantastic trying to find 'the perfect outfit' for tonight?" Integra rolled her eyes. "She kept going on about how she needed something -" She mimicked Trish Stratus's whine 'to bring out her.. uhh.. eyes."
"Her eyes?" Christain raised an eyebrow. "Why waste the time when everyone's going to be busy focusing on those advertisements for Nebuchadnezzar's Jooblie Enlargements on her chest?"
Everyone looked at him. He looked back in confusion. "What?"
"I'll explain later honey." Lydia patted him on the shoulder, then turned her attention to the screen. "I've said it before and I'll say it again - gotta love a guy who can step over the ring ropes."
"Excuse me? When have you said that?"
"Many times." Integra waved a hand in the air. "Like every time Test, Kane, Taker.. even Albert on occasion gets into the ring."
Christain raised an eyebrow at Lydia. She shrugged. "What can I say? I like long legs. Especially when they're encased in leather."
"Lydia, next time you consider leaving Christain for any longer than 2 days, I'm going to remind you of this conversation." Edge warned with a smirk. "Speaking of which, bro are you gonna be up for tonight's match? Cause I doubt either of you slept much last night."
"Shut up Blondie." Integra elbowed him. "Just concentrate on winning this match. There's a lot riding on it."
"You guys must be psyched. Everyone is convinced you’re going to win those belts tonight." Chris said. Lydia smirked at Edge. "There's more than the belts riding on tonight’s match. "
"If you start humming what I think your going to start humming Lyd, I'm going to rip your vocal chords out." Integra warned her. Lydia grinned and sang "My D-I-V-O-R-C-E came through today -"
The rest of the song was cut off by a knock at the door. "Can I come in?"
"Please! Anything to save us from Lydia's singing!" replied Chris as Stephanie came into the room. "The match is just finishing. You're on next. You guys ready?"
"Nearly." Edge replied, grabbing his hat. He grinned at Integra. "Good luck kiss?"
"You even have to ask?" She grinned back. Stephanie rolled her eyes and turned to speak to Lydia, only to discover that she was doing the same. After a few minutes, Chris threw a cushion at them. "How much luck do they need?"
"Not that much." replied Stephanie dryly. "Are you two coming or not?"
"Yeah yeah yeah." muttered Christain following Edge out the door.
"Good luck!" called Integra as Lydia shouted "BE CAREFUL DAMNIT!"
"It's a ladder match Lyd." Chris pointed out. "There's no hope."
~~~
"OH MY GOD!" wailed Lydia, burying her face in her hands. "I can't take this any more!"
"I don't think you have to." Stephanie put an arm around her stressed out friend. "Edge is following Matt up the ladder. I'm sure this is it. If you don't look up now, you'll miss it and you'll be kicking yourself."
Lydia took a deep breath and looked up as Integra screamed. "YES! COME ON BABY!"
The three women stared at the screen as Matt Hardy went through the table on the mat. Without speaking Lydia and Integra clasped hands as Edge stood up to reach for the belts. Lydia couldn't believe it as he handed a belt to his younger brother. "Oh god, oh god, oh god."
"THEY DID IT!" Integra screamed, jumping off the couch and dancing around the room. "THEY DID IT!"
"Thank god that's over." Lydia burst into tears of relief and joy, watching the replay on the screen. It finally sunk in. "Holy shit! They did it!"
"Damnit Lyd, do you realise what just happened?" Integra demanded. "Our men just won the Tag Team Belts!"
"Which makes you the future wife of a Tag Team Champion." A weary, but extremely pleased voice stated. Integra threw herself at Edge. "Oh god baby, I'm so proud of you."
Stephanie watched with a smile as her friends congratulated their men. Lydia seemed more intent on checking Christain over for injuries than anything else, the intensity of the match and the bumps he'd taken had taken an emotional toll on Lydia. As Steph watched, the two women hugged their men tightly and spoke in unison. "Thank God your ok."
Integra extended her comment. "Now give me your belt."
"No!" Edge held the belt of reach. Integra reached for it. "Gimme!"
"Nope."
"What yours is mine and what's mine is mine! Now gimme, gimme, gimme!"
Christain looked over at his brother and future sister in law. "Wanna wear the belt Lyd?"
"Nah, I'll wait for the party tonight." She smiled up at him. "But I do think that the kids would look adorable in it."
"Where are the kids?" asked Stephanie with a confused look. Christain grinned. "The Acolytes."
"APA? Are you nuts?"
"Of course. I'm gonna go and get them." Lydia rushed out of the room. She returned a few minutes with Jason, Lucilla and a puzzled look. "Hey Steph.. I just ran into Jesse. He, X-Pac, Tori and Hunter are looking everywhere for you."
"Oh for gods sake." mutter Stephanie under her breath. "What do they want?"
"I don't know, but Jess said it was urgent." Lydia sounded worried. Confused, Stephanie excused herself and hurried to the DX locker room, only to find it empty. With a frustration sigh, she found her cell and called Hunter. "What’s up?"
"Where are you?"
"Our locker room."
"Stay where you are. I'll be with you in a minute."
"Hunter -" Stephanie started to ask him what was going on, but he'd already hung up. Within 5 minutes he'd arrived at the dressing room, looking serious. Steph's worry increased. "Hunter what's going on?"
He sat heavily in an armchair. "First of all, Vince is up to something, we just don't know what. I'm almost certain he'll turn on Rocky, but I have no idea who he's gonna help."
"Not us." remarked Stephanie dryly. "If he does, then he'd better have a damned good reason on why we would want his help after what he did."
"You're forgetting one very important thing Steph." Hunter said gently. "He doesn't know that you know."
"Oh shit." Stephanie cursed. She wasn’t sure she'd be able to confront her father with what she knew if he somehow tried to win her back to his side. Hunter sighed. "That's the bad news."
"Please tell me there's good news." She begged, feeling something close to panic settling in her stomach. Hunter shook his head and patted his leg. "You'd better sit down."
Nervously, Stephanie sat on her husbands lap as he put an arm around her waist. "While you were with Integra and Lydia your cell rang. It was Sally Moroe's sister Toni."
"I remember Sally and Daisy mentioning her." Stephanie stalled; not wanting to hear what she knew would be terrible news. Daisy wanted me to meet her, but -"
"Steph. Please let me finish."
"I'm sorry."
"Sally and Daisy were in a car accident. Sally's fine, she asked Toni to call you. She wants us - and Jericho - to come to the hospital as soon as the show finishes."
"How's Daisy?" Stephanie's face had gone chalk white. She grabbed at Hunter's arm urgently. ~Oh god, my baby girl..~ Hunter hesitated. "Toni didn't say."
"Didn't or wouldn't?" Stephanie snapped. "Or did she say and you're just not telling me?"
Hunter sighed. There was no mistaking the stark terror in Stephanie's face. He weighed the options and decided he'd better tell her now, so that she'd be prepared when they got to the hospital. "Toni said that Sally had been stabilised... but the doctors were still working on Daisy. They're not sure if she'll make it."
Lydia and Integra exchanged a smirk as the three men made their way backstage after the match. Integra giggled. "You take Mr Roboto. I'm still not convinced he does have a sense of humour."
"He's like Blackman. A giant teddy bear, you just gotta know how to handle him." Lydia chuckled. She looked at the bundle in her hands which was identical to the identical one Integra was holding and then the small crowd. "Let's piss off a couple more of our co-workers."
Trying hard to keep a straight face, Lydia walked up to Chris Benoit as Integra headed for Kurt Angle. "Congratulations on getting the belt."
"Thanks." Benoit looked at her suspiciously and started to walk away. Lydia frantically glanced over at where Integra was talking to Kurt, with the same amount of success. Integra looked over and mouthed 'Now.' Lydia grinned. "Hey Chris?"
"Yeah?" He turned around and looked at her quizzically. Smiling sweetly, she handed him the bundle. "This is for you."
Confused, Benoit, unwrapped the brown package and looked at what was inside. He pulled out a black t-shirt that had in red lettering 'I went to Anahiem and all I got was this lousy t-shirt' on the front and 'And a Y2J beating I will never ever forget' on the back. Benoit looked at it for a long minute then held it up for a better look. "You girls are sick, twisted and completely insane."
"Thank you." Lydia smiled sweetly as Benoit displayed the top for everyone to see. Word had gotten around that the 'Wakefield Twins' had something up their sleeves and a large part of the roster had found a reason to be in the backstage area. After a minute, Benoit looked at Lydia and shook his head, something dangerously akin to smile before turning and walking away.
Integra had less luck with Kurt. He looked at his t-shirt and glared at Integra, then at Lydia who had appeared at her friends side for moral support. "I suppose you girls think this is funny?"
"Well... yeah." replied Integra with a chuckle as Lydia nodded in agreement. Kurt put his hands on his hips. "Well it's not funny. To make a joke at the expense of another human beings suffering and misery is just… well it lacks integrity!"
"Yes?" Integra snapped to attention. Kurt looked confused. "Huh?"
"You said my name. I assumed you were talking to me."
"No, no, no!" He actually stamped his foot, much to the amusement of those still watching. "I said integrity! Not Integra! Pay attention when people are talking to you! It's damned rude to just -"
Integra grinned and waved as she caught sight of Chris Jericho over Kurt's shoulder. She and Lydia walked off to a round of applause and leaving Kurt fuming. Chris clapped and laughed as they hugged him in congratulations. "Nicely done."
"Thank you." smirked Lydia. She elbowed Integra. "Told ya Benoyt was nothin but a giant teddy bear."
"Yeah, yeah." Intregra seemed unimpressed. "Chris, are you gonna be at the party tonight?"
"Any reason why I wouldn't be?" He asked with a laugh.
"Yeah, there is." A voice interrupted. The trio looked up at Hunter in surprise. "Gals, would you mind leaving Jericho and I alone for a second? I need to talk to him about something."
"What do you want Helmsley?" Chris snapped, his good mood evaporating. Hunter waited until the girls were out of earshot before speaking. "Something's happened. Something bad."
"Is it Steph?" Chris asked, a knot of fear forming in his guts at the look on Hunter's face. He shook his head. "No, not Steph. Daisy."
"Don't even bullshit about that Helmsley." Chris whispered hoarsely. "That's just... don't."
The emotion in Jericho's voice hit him like a physical blow and the look in his eyes made Hunter step backwards. Suddenly, he wished that someone else had the job of delivering the bad news.
"I'm not bullshitting you. Sally's sister called. Sally and Daisy were in a car wreck. Sally's ok, Daisy's in doubt. We're leaving straight after we go off the air, be ready."
"I can't believe you think I wouldn't be." snapped Chris. Hunter fought back the urge to retort angrily, realising that the younger man must be going through an emotional hell. He bit his lip and put a comforting hand on Chris's shoulder in a move that surprised both of them. "I'll see you in the parking lot after the show."
Stephanie plastered a smile on her face as Hunter got the 3 count on Mick Foley. That was two down, one to go and then she could get the hell out of there. She'd even considered just leaving and missing the main event completely, but when she'd called Toni for an update just before the match, she'd been told not to miss it.
Most of the match passed by in a blur. Her concern about Daisy made it east for her act distressed and worried, especially when Rocky put Hunter through the Spanish announcers table. It was just too much for her to handle, worrying about her husband, her daughter and whatever stunt Vince was rumoured to be pulling. Stephanie just wished the match was over so she could get to her daughter's side.
"SHANE! WAIT!" He turned around to see Integra running and waving a piece of paper at him. "What is it Teg? I've got a match to interrupt."
"I know." She panted. "But Steph's phone rang and she told me to somehow get a message to her if this particular person called, and can you please give this to her somehow?"
She gave Shane a small piece of paper. He looked at it doubtfully. "I don't know... it’s not like I can walk up and hand it to her. Can't it wait?"
"No, I really think she'd like this information as soon as possible." Integra insisted. Shane raised an eyebrow. "I'll do my best."
"I need to get the message to her. I'll find another way if I have to, but please, Shane, forget about all the shit that's been happening between you two and just do it for me." She pleaded. ~Teg's going for a guilt trip? That was more Lydia's style. This must important.~ He sighed. "I'll do it."
~~~
Stephanie was jolted out of her thoughts as someone bumped her. She looked around in confusion, her eyes widening in surprise as she saw her older brother attacking Vince. She stepped forwards, feeling her shoe kick something slightly. Looking down, Steph noticed a folded piece of paper on the floor. Checking to see that no cameras were on her, she knelt and picked it up.
It took all of her self control not to scream as she read the hastily scrawled words. She crumpled the note in her hand, breathing deeply and trying to keep herself calm. Through a daze, she remembered the match and forced herself to react appropriately at the right times although it was a struggle to keep her composure when Vince hit the Rock with a chair and Hunter got the pin on Rocky to retain the belt.
On auto pilot, she climbed into the ring to check on Hunter, then suddenly realised that Vince was standing in the ring with his arms held out for a hug. She shuddered and was about to turn away, when it occurred to her. There was no reason to fight him any more.
~~~
In the parking lot, Chris paced impatiently. Where the hell were they? The match was over, Helmsley had retained the belt, the Princess had reunited with her jerk father for whatever screwed up reason, but that didn't change the most important thing - his daughter was in the hospital, possibly dying and he wasn't with her.
After what seemed like an eternity, a lithe figure made it's way towards him. He threw his hands in the air in irritation. "GODAMNIT STEPH! Where the hell have you been? Let's get going!"
"Chris.." Her voice was raw and as he looked closer, he realised she was shaking. His breath caught in his throat. "Oh god..."
Instinctively, he moved forwards and wrapped Stephanie in his arms. She buried her face in his shoulder and started crying. It was then that he knew for certain. "When?"
"Maybe half an hour ago." Stephanie whispered. "They did everything they could.. but it wasn't enough. Our daughter is dead."
