February 1st
Stephanie looked at her watch impatiently. She'd been waiting for nearly half an hour. If Lydia didn't hurry up, then they'd miss the two for one drinks. With an impatient sigh, she picked up the phone. "Can you put me through to room 389 please?"
"I'm sorry, there's someone using that telephone." The bored receptionist informed her. Irritated, Stephanie slammed the phone down. All she wanted was a night on the town with one of her friends. Was that too much to ask? Although Jesse had said that Lydia had already been drinking with Integra, so maybe she'd already had enough for one night. Stephanie tried to call again, but someone was still on the phone. Annoyed and slightly angry, Stephanie decided to go and collect Lydia herself.
She threw open the door and stopped short when she saw who was standing on the other side of it. Just what she didn't need. "What the hell do you want?"
"I have been looking all over for you!" Chris Jericho said with relief. He grabbed her by the wrist. "Come on let's go."
"Get your hand off me." Stephanie replied coldly. He raised his hands in the air. "Fine. Just follow me."
"Why the hell should I?" She challenged, crossing her arms. Chris rolled his eyes. "Because Lydia isn't coming clubbing. She's up in her hotel room, crying and packing her things. Plus she'd like to see you before she leaves for god only knows how long. Are you coming or not?"
Stephanie pushed past Chris and started running down the hall. She jabbed at the lift buttons impatiently as he caught up with her. "She won't leave without seeing you Steph."
"What's going on Chris?" Steph was worried. He looked at the expression on her face and remembered the girl had referred to her friends as her family several years ago. Despite the ups and downs since then, it seemed she still felt the same way about the Wakefield twins. Too bad her feelings about him seemed to have completely changed.
Chris waited till they were in the lift before speaking again. "Did she mention to you that she was having problems with her family?"
Stephanie nodded. Lydia had never made any secret of the fact that she did not get along with her family and had left home at 15 to live with Vanessa in Canada. She'd only been back twice in ten years - once, for the funeral of a relative and once, with Christain when she'd been pregnant with the twins. Christain hadn't said much on the matter, other than he could understand why Lydia had left and refused to go back.
"Yeah, her sister claims that having the twins on the road with her and Christain is no way to raise children and is also saying that Lydia is an unfit mother." Stephanie's voice was filled with disgust. Chris nodded. "Apparently Simone went to some lawyers, but they laughed her out of the office. Since it seems there's no way she can legally do it, it seems she's going to try and do it illegally."
"Kidnap Jason and Lucilla." Stephanie felt sick and understood Lydia's fears. Since the same thing had practically happened to her, she could understand her friends desire to take her children to safety - where ever that might be.
In their hotel room, Integra and Lydia were packing up the twins stuff while Christain and Edge talked in low voices. All four of them stopped and looked up when Chris pushed Stephanie into the room.
"Did he fill you in?" Edge asked curtly. Stephanie wasn't his favourite person in the world, but Lydia had requested her there and out of respect to the mother of his niece and nephew and his little brother, he would tolerate her and remain as civil as he could. Stephanie nodded. "When are you leaving?"
"As soon as this gets packed up and loaded into the car." Christain said wearily, brushing a strand of hair off his forehead. Chris gestured at a box that someone had hastily scrawled 'Lucilla's Toys' on. "Want me to take these down to the car?"
"Trying to get rid of me Christopher?" Lydia said edgily. Chris shook his head in confusion. "No, I just thought -"
"Well don't think ok?" snapped Edge. Integra rested a hand on his shoulder. "Settle down baby."
Stephanie moved through the mess to hug Lydia and glared at Chris over her shoulder. He did look genuinely confused. Lydia hugged Steph back tightly. "I'm so scared. If Simone... "
"Hey. Hey." Christain stood up and strode over to Lydia and wrapped her tightly in his arms. "Don't even think that! I really wish you'd stay here and -"
"I can't. It'd be too easy. Hell baby, how many times a day does someone come in and ask to take the twins for a bit? How often do we end up spending half an hour or more looking for the kids because they've been passed around from person to person? I can't risk it." Lydia was fighting back tears as she rested her head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat. Christain rocked her in his arms. "I know baby."
He shot a helpless look at his brother. By now, Chris and Stephanie were feeling more than a little out of place. Chris looked at Steph, who nodded slightly towards the door. Lydia looked up. "Don't go."
"Well what do you want us to do?" Steph asked.
"Just be here. Talk to me. I don't know. I have no idea when I'll be back and I just..." She trailed off, unable to complete the sentence. Integra did it for her. "Want the Dirty Half Dozen together again one last time."
"Exactly." Lydia grinned shakily. Edge raised an eyebrow. "The Dirty Half Dozen?"
"Well there's too many of us to be the Stooges or the Musketeers."
"You are a strange, strange woman." Edge shook his head. Lydia poked her tongue out. "That's why you love me so much."
"I really hate saying this, but you'd better hustle." Integra said quietly. "Simone sounded.. well crazed."
"That's because she's crazy." replied Lydia, composing herself. "But your right. The sooner we get away, the longer it'll take for her to realise we're not here."
"Would she really try to snatch the twins?" Chris asked in surprise. Christain nodded. "Oh yeah. She's just.." He smiled at Lydia, who had returned to packing. "I'm so glad you didn't turn out like that baby."
"Thank Vanessa." she replied dryly. "She took me in when I had nowhere else to go."
Christain laughed, but it sounded strained. Chris realised the two hadn't really been apart since they'd gotten together. The only exception was a few weeks over Christmas when Lydia had spent some time with Edge & Christain's mother. This was gonna be hell for both of them. Lydia taped the box shut and looked at the others unhappily. "Last one."
"Do you know where you're going?" Stephanie asked. Lydia nodded. "But I'd prefer it if you didn't know. That's one of the reasons I wanted you two here."
She nodded at Stephanie and Chris. "Simone is dangerous. She's crazy and she's convinced that I owe her something. That's a bad combination. To make matters worse, she's smart. I'm not saying you guys are in danger, but you could be. She's got some pretty fucked up friends. Promise me you'll be careful."
"I promise." replied Stephanie and Chris in unison. They looked at each other a little unsettled, not seeing the knowing grins Lydia & Integra exchanged. Stephanie had the feeling that she'd already extracted the same promise from Integra & Edge. Silently, the four of them looked at the boxes. Edge put a hand on Lydia's arm. "You really should head off soon. It's late and you've got a long trip ahead of you."
"I know." She didn't move. Christain stroked her hair. "Babe.."
"Has everything been finalised?" Stephanie asked, not knowing quite what else to do. Edge nodded. "Vanessa's gonna drive them to the station. One of her friends is gonna meet Lyd off the train and take them to the secret location."
"Do you know where it is?" Chris asked Integra. She shook her head. "All I know is my evil twin and my niece and nephew are abandoning me."
Lydia hugged Integra tightly. "We'll be back soon. Just don't get hitched without us ok?"
"As if I would." Integra replied. Christain nodded at Chris & Edge. "Better get moving."
Much to Christain and Lydia's dismay, it only took a few minutes to load all the boxes into Vanessa's van. Chris, Stephanie, Integra and Edge said goodbye, Vanessa shooting angry looks at Stephanie the whole time. The four looked away as Christain said goodbye to his woman and children. Integra felt a pang of sympathy. "This is gonna be hell for them."
"I know." Edge wrapped his arms around Integra's waist. "Remind me to thank your parents for being relatively normal."
Christain rejoined them and the five of them waved as Vanessa drove off, Lydia hanging out the window and waving. From where they were, they could see the tears streaming down her cheeks. Edge put an arm across his brother's shoulders. "Are you ok?"
"Not really." Christain replied, seeming on the verge of tears himself. Edge squeezed his shoulder. "Come on. We'll head back up and I'll make you a hot chocolate. With marshmallows. Just the way you liked it as a kid."
Christain nodded half heartedly. Integra turned to Stephanie and Chris. "We'll see you tomorrow."
Chris nodded in understanding. He and Steph watched as the trio headed back inside. When they were out of view, they looked at each other awkwardly. Stephanie broke the silence first. "How long do you think she'll be gone?"
"God only knows." Chris shrugged. Steph checked her watch. "Do you have time for a coffee? There's something I really need to talk to you about."
"Is it urgent?" Chris tried to sound disinterested. She nodded. "It is actually."
"Ok, it's just that I told Chyna I'd be back in five minutes and it's been over an hour."
"Chyna?" Stephanie repeated before she could stop herself. She felt her stomach drop. Her ex and Hunter's ex. Together. Wonderful.
