1971-1981
For most of the twelve years I spent on the staff of Selwyn House School, I was also
the advisor for the Student Entertainment Committee. What began as an attempt to help the
boys with their dances developed into a part-time business supplying music for many
different occasions. It was also the main reason for my entry into the world of computers.
At the height of our development we carried more than 10,000 songs with us and this forced
us to have a very detailed catalog of our holdings.
For several years we used the computer at the Montreal Star to accomplish this but when
they closed their doors in 1978, I was suddenly forced to turn to the personal computer. I
purchased an Apple ][ plus with 48K of memory, two single sided (100k) floppy drives and a
small B/W 12" television . Since there were very few business programs available, I
had to learn to program in BASIC in order to write the program to carry on the music
catalog. The many long but fascinating hours spent at the keyboard of the computer
gradually pulled me into its orbit and away from that of the disco.
