Profile on: The Comet (The Great Escape)

HISTORY

The Comet originally opened May 22, 1948 at Crystal Beach Amusement Park in Ontario, Canada. Another coaster at Crystal Beach named Cyclone got removed a year before and its steel structure was reused when The Comet was built. The Comet was designed by Herb Schmeck and built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company.

When Crystal Beach closed in 1989 many coaster enthusiasts felt that The Comet would be left there and gone forever. Luckily The Comet got auctionned off and Charlie Wood of The Great Escape Fun Park, located in Lake George, New York, bought the coaster and moved it to his park.

On June 6, 1994 The Comet reopened at a cost of $4,000,000. It was rebuilt by John Pierce of JR Hyatt. The Comet was the only wooden coaster moved from one country to another. The Comet is now ranked as one of the top 5 wooden roller coasters in the world.
