3. Preliminary setup

You actually need to do a few things before installing the GUS in your computer.

Identifying the card
First of all, if you do not know exactly what Ultrasound card you have, click here. Note that this guide will only help you with the Classic GUS, the MAX or the ACE. I don't own a PnP, so I can't help you.

Setting your port address
This is the only operation that will require playing with onboard jumpers. Wether you have another sound card in your computer or not, I strongly suggest that you set the base address to 240. This will prevent potential PnP problems if you ever add another sound card later. I've had a lot of problems when I've added a Vibra16 PnP in my system which had a GUS set to 220, so trust me - set it to 240. This can be done by changing some jumpers on the card as sown below:

Jumper settings for the Classic
Jumper settings for the MAX 1.7/1.8
Jumper settings for the MAX 2.1

Identifying the card
Plug the card in a free ISA slot on your motherboard. Must I say more? The card is huge, it might not fit in your case.
