After pilot error causes a devastating airline crash, Devain Industries unveils the CD70 -- a revolutionary automated system invented by Tom Woodard (Casper Van Dien) and his wife Samantha (Nicole Eggert of ''Baywatch'') designed to someday make human pilots obsolete. But when reckless playboy Charles Devain (Patrick Muldoon of Starship Troopers and ''Melrose Place'') and his billionaire father (Brad Dourif of Halloween and ''Deadwood'') insist on using the prototype for a celebratory VIP flight from Los Angeles to New York City, a computer virus triggers a terrifying chain of events: The 747 goes off-course during a lightning storm. Their communication systems are dead. And the Pentagon wants to blast the crippled jet -- and its passengers -- out of the sky. Even if Tom can make a mid-air transfer at 30,000 feet, will he be able to disengage the infected system, or will Tom and the passengers fall victim to Turbulent Skies?
How often is one going to review two movies in one week both starring Casper Van Dien and Patrick Muldoon? Well it's happened and as odd as it seems here goes, "Turbulent Skies" is no way "Airport 1975," in fact it's not even close but it does have a few things going for it. It's hard to dismiss a movie with a cast that has Brad Dourif, Casper Van Dien, Nicole Eggert and Patrick Muldoon in it after all Brad Dourif has to be worth the time alone. Sadly almost everything about this made for TV movie is lacking. There isn't much of a plot, the effects are weak and the dialogue just isn't very good plus the film never does create any real tension of fear like it should. Now before I get ahead of myself here we have to take into consideration that this is a made for TV movie so the effects are not going to be something we see in the big Hollywood productions so I can over-look that aspect of it but I do think the script could of been better so the story had some urgency to it and the characters could of been more developed as well. This is a hard film to recommend to mainstream movie goers but if you like the occasional Syfy channel or any other television channel that produces this type of movie then I say have a look.
I try to be fair to every movie I review, you can always find something good in any movie and here it's the cast. It's just a shame they were wasted for the most part but to be fair "Turbulent Skies" is what it is, it's no better or worse than all the other made for TV movies that came before it so it's hard to give this one points other than for it's cast but if you like this kind of movie then give it a go. The DVD doesn't come with any bonus features other than the trailer but you can order it HERE.
