A passionate filmmaker, creating a film based upon a true crime, casts an unknown mysterious young woman bearing a disturbing resemblance to the femme fatale in the story. He finds himself unsuspectingly drawn into a complex web of haunting intrigue, obsessed with the woman, the crime, her possibly notorious past and the disturbing complexity between art and truth.
From the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina to Verona, Rome and London, new truths are revealed and clues to other crimes and passions, darker and even more complex are uncovered.
If I had the chance to ask Director Monte Hellman one question it would be "Where have you been?" That being said it's been a long time but it was well worth the wait. To talk a lot about the story here would only ruin the experience plus it could never give you a clear picture of what happens in the film because there's a bunch of things happening with multiple characters. To explain what the film is about in a few words I would say it's about a young filmmaker who is shooting a movie based on a true story and things go very wrong and it involves what he believed to be his perfect lead actress.
That is about all you all you need to know before sitting down to this masterpiece. The story-within-the-story concept of this film is both captivating and entertaining at the same time, it plays out like a poetic puzzle that you can't take your eyes off of as you wait and wonder what is going to happen next. The entire cast brought their A-game here including Shannyn Sossamon, Cliff De Young and Waylon Payne who are all marvelous and John Diehl has never been better.
The production values here are simple incredible as well, I have not seen cinematography look this good in sometime. "Road To Nowhere" might not be a movie for everyone, it's a thinking man's film but it's also for those that are old enough to remember when movies were an art, when everything about the film made you sit back in your chair and just go, WOW! If you remember those times then you like so many others including myself are going to fall in love with this film.
