Enrolling in a drug study to spice up his humdrum life as a low-paid meter reader, Les Franken begins taking an experimental antidepressant, which proves to have a few unexpected side effects. Convinced that he's actually developing special powers that can be used to fight evil, Les decides to quit his day job and focus on being a superhero … despite his doctor's professional opinion that his abilities are all in his mind.
The film's title pretty much sums up all you need to know about this Independent film, it is a dark comedy that is character driven and yes it is indeed Special. Michael Rapaport is brilliant as Les, a man taking a experimental anti-depressant only to be over come with side effect including thinking he a super-hero with special powers. The last film that left such a lasting impression as "Lars and the Real Girl", Special is much like that in that you really get drawn into the character's life and you feel for him and it is like you want to reach out to him and give him a hug. Special is clever, it's funny, it's sad and it is one of the most entertaining movies of the year and a must own for any lover of cinema, I already watched this film twice and plan on seeing it again soon.
