Desperate to save his dead grandpa's casino from a greedy developer, One Eyed Jack Faro (Woody Harrelson) enters the Grand Championship of Poker in Zak Penn's mockumentary. A sports cable channel follows One Eyed Jack as he outbluffs the bluffers and ups the ante.
What is so good about this comedy is that Director Zak Penn took a chance making a film with actor's using their characters to play a real poker tournament and even if some of if doesn't work most of it does and the result is a often hilarious comedy with some strange and off the wall characters. The ensemble cast is terrific and Penn really got some very funny actors to take part in this film including, Ray Romano, Werner Herzog, Cheryl Hines, David Cross, Dennis Farina, Jason Alexander, Michael McKean, Hank Azaria along with Woody Harrelson. The improv style of this film is original and refreshing. This is also some very different for Director Zak Peen who has mostly done Comic superhero scripts in the last few years and he does a great job here keeping the pace going and laughs coming with all the different characters there are in the film. Some may not fine this as enjoyable as this is not a mainstream teen comedy you might be use to seeing, instead The Grand is a clever and very funny comedy that hits all the right notes with it's outstanding cast and wonderful writing.
