The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
Cast: Jet Li, Wen Zhang, Kwai Lun-Mei, Zhu Yuanyuan, Dong Yong, Yan Minqiu
One person out of every thousand is born with autism. It follows that China has over one million autism patients. David is one of them: he looks absent-minded, repeats other people's words, swims with amazing ease, keeps everything at home in exact order… and maybe he is not totally aware of his mother's death some years ago. Working in an aquarium, Sam Wong takes tender care of this twenty-two-year-old son of his. With the generous help of the neighbors, the two live happily together. Yet, the father understands very well that in the end, he will have to depart from the world, leaving his son alone – and that day will come sooner than everyone is ready to believe.
This film is an ode to a father who is determined to find shelter for his son before it is too late. In the process, the boy achieves a measure of independence necessary for both to let go.
There's a large number of people that love Jet Li and martial arts cinema but this is not only one of his finest performances but it's also a role in which we have never seen him in before and let me just say it really showcases his acting skills. We have all taken for granted his martial arts skills not really knowing just how amazing an actor he really is but with "Ocean Heaven" that is all about to change.
The film tells a beautiful story about a terminally ill father and his autistic son, and how real love goes beyond everything even death. The story is pretty simple but it's engaging, thought-provoking and touching. To talk about the plot too much would be a crime, this is movie that needs to seen to be appreciated. Not to be over-shadowed by Li's performance Lunmei Kwai is simply amazing as his son in the film.
"Ocean Heaven" is the kind of film but made you love cinema in the first place, it's a story of endless love and devotion that will melt your heart. Yes Jet Li is terrific here but it's the entire cast, production and story that makes this a real gem and one for drama lovers everywhere.
