The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
Cast: Michael Madsen, Keith David, Richard Tyson, Declan Joyce, Protasio, Heather Storm
The theft of Mayan artifacts sets off a fast-paced tale of romance and suspense on the Yucatan Peninsula in which a man working to escape his past teams up with a woman determined to find out what happened to her missing anthropologist mother. Danger, humor and mystery abound as the two adventurers try to navigate the natural and unnatural challenges facing them in this film.
As the film opens it is 1240 A.D. in the Yucatan Peninsula, we see a Mayan man has hidden a mask in an underwater cave before being killed by men from another tribe. It then switches to present day where three American archeologists are looking to find the mask with the help of some locals. But they are not the only ones interested in finding it, Lester a rich and very dangerous man is also hunting it and will kill to get it. When the archeologists go missing Alexis the sister of one of the women taken travels to Yucatan to try and find her sister. After arriving she meets Nico a man running from his past who after some convincing decides to help Alexis find her sister. This is a low budget adventure flick that is pretty entertaining on a whole. There is plenty of action and even some humor a long they way as the two try and find the missing sister before they too are killed. The film is promoted as having Michael Madsen and Richard Tyson in it but their roles are small so don't go into this thinking they are the lead actors or you are going to be disappointed. The acting varies but the leads do a pretty good job including Heather Storm and Protasio who play the main characters here. The film also uses a lot of the locals in the film and even if the were not professional I thought they gave the film that extra needed feel. The film is nothing new or ground breaking but I still found it to be a fast-paced and fun adventure that is certainly enjoyable for what it is. There is also a little 2012 talk at the end and it seems to be left open in case they wanted to do a sequel. I would of liked to have seen more of Tyson and Madsen in the film but over-all it was a nice way to waste an hour and a half. If you like this sort of adventure film then I recommend picking this one up as a change of pace from the same old theatrical stuff coming out.
