The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
Cast: Emmy Rossum, Sandra Bernhard, Ana Gasteyer, Rooney Mara, Ashley Springer, Alan Cumming, Zach Gilford
In their final semester before graduation from an affluent suburban high school, good girl Alexa (Emmy Rossum), outcast Ben (Ashley Springer) and bad boy Johnny (Zach Gilford) decide to shed their youthful inhibitions and take some very grown-up risks. A twisty tale of betrayal, heartbreak and unleashed sexuality ensues.
The film is based on a short film that can be viewed online if you want to look it up. What seems like a typical "Teen" drama on the outside is much more than you would expect after you start watching it. The basic story here is you have three different teens with different lives and different personalities who find out that different doesn't have to be. The film spends most of it's time letting us get to know each character so that when the final segment of the film comes up you are ready and prepared for the outcome. This is nothing like any teen film you might of seen before for several reasons, one reason being this is more a thinking man's film so those of you that get bored easy with drama I suggest you look elsewhere but for those up to the challenge I think you will be rewarded in the end for sticking with it. What starts out to be something pretty innocent slowly gets a little messed up as the film moves along but in a good way as far as the story goes. The cast that consists of Emmy Rossum, Sandra Berhard and Alan Cumming all are terrific here each making their characters believable and they all bring just the right amount of emotion to their roles. Dare is a film about self-discovery and one that rises above many films like it before with it's intelligent story-telling and cast that delivers. I found this to be thought-provoking and entertaining at the same time and the story was told in such a way that you never really know where it is going or how it will end but I found it to be a journey worth taking, If you like a good drama I recommend picking this up today.
