A disturbed mother of four delivers an unimaginable level of abuse to her children while defending her actions with her own twisted interpretations of the Bible. Based on a true story, The Afflicted takes you inside the lives of those who live in constant fear with no escape.

"The Afflicted" is pretty straight froward story wise so to talk anymore about the plot here would only ruin the film for those waiting to see it. The strength of the film is in it's direction and it's cast. The direction is amazing and the film moves at a nice clip, the film also looks much better than it's budget might suggest. All the young girls in the film give realistic and believable performances and it was nice to see Kane Hodder again even though he has a very small role as the father. The highlight of the film is Leslie Easterbrook who also co-produced the film as well. Her performance as the abusive mother makes "Mommie Dearest" look like "Mary Poppins," she is brilliant here with her ability to turn her moments of rage on and off so easily is something to watch. Amazing range and one of the top movie performances I have seen in some time.

Like I said before they story is pretty simple but it's the fantastic performances and great direction by Jason Stoddard that makes this a must see film. No big surprises plot wise but the film is disturbing tense to the point where it can be hard to watch at times, this is brave film-making at it's finest...a no holds barred look at domestic abuse of the worse kind.

If you can handle this kind of movie then I cannot recommend seeing it enough for it's truly stellar cast. Winner: Best Fiction/Non-Horror Film - Motor City Nightmares Film Festival (2011) and for good reason, I haven't been taken back by this kind of subject matter in some time, a highly effective Psychological Thriller that stays with you long after it's over.
