"It's hot in here. Do you want to go outside?" Katie yelled over the booming music.
"Yeah." Zac yelled back. They walked out of the gym and out the side doors.
"Ulgh, I didn't realize how hot it was till I got out here." Zac said, fanning himself once they were outside.
"Yeah. Too many people." Katie said smiling, her cheeks flushed.
"Yeah. I agree." Zac said, unbuttoning the top button of his shirt.
"So, do you think we screwed up our pictures?" She asked with a smile.
"I hope not!" Zac said. "I hope i didn't do something stupid like blink."
"That would suck. And they only took one." Katie said.
"Yeah." Zac said. They were silent for a moment, just watching their warm breath form clouds in the cold air.
"Well...You look really great tonight."
"Thanks." Katie said.
"No one else is wearing lightblue." He pointed out.
"Yeah...That's what I was afraid of; having the same red dress as a million other people."
"Yeah." Zac said. There was an awkward silence between them for a moment.
"Ready to go back in?" She asked.
"Yeah." He said. They walked back into the dance just as a slow song came on.
"Want to?" He asked.
"I'd love to." She replied. He led her to an empty spot on the packed dancefloor and turned to her. She placed her arms around his neck, and he placed his around her waist.
This isn't how we used to dance...we used to dance closer... Zac thought. Oh well...he would take what he could get.
"You know, I'm really glad we're friends again." He said.
"Me too." Katie said, smiling at him. Zac felt his stomach flutter.
"You know, despite ....I dunno...everything that's been going on the past few months."
"Yeah. I'm glad." Katie said.
"Me too." Zac said. They smiled at each other and Zac took the opportunity to step a little closer. He felt Katie inch closer too.
Score....
Zac sat down on one of the couchs of Nicole's basement. He had just changed into sweatpants and a long-sleeved t-shirt for her 'movie party' after the dance. Zac, Katie, Nicole, Adam, and three other couples had come to Nicole's after the dance to watch movies. The girls would spend the night at Nicole's, and the guys were sleeping at Scott's house, which was across the street and down five or six houses.
"That wasn't terrible I guess." Nate said.
"Nah." Scott agreed.
"It was fun." Adam said. He turned to Zac. "What'd you think?"
"It was cool." Zac said, nodding.
They heard a loud thunk and a bunch of giggling in the kitchen above them. The five boys all looked upwards, as if they could see what was going on.
"Dude, this is going to be interesting." Nate said, still looking upwards.
"I agree." Scott said.
"So, what's the deal with you and Jess now?" Nate asked.
"I dunno." Scott said. "I was thinknin' of askin her to be my girlfriend or something tonight, but I dunno." He said with a shrug.
"Dude, go for it. I'm gonna ask Nicole to be my girlfriend too. You should go for it." Adam said. He turned to Nate. "You too. I know you've got the hotts for Erin."
"I dunno..."
"Dude, go for it!" Zac said, grinning.
"Yeah." Scott said. "It's the trend tonight."
"If you ask out Erin, I'll ask out Emily." Dwight spoke up.
"You will? Cool. I'm in." Nate said. "It's what she wants anyway. It'll be classic tonight."
"Yeah."
"Sweet, so, is that all of us? Dwight and Emily, Nate and Erin, Adam and Nicole, and Jessica and Nate....Zac?"
All the boys' attention was turned to Zac.
"What?" He asked, caught off guard.
"What are you gonna do tonight?"
Zac was speechless. He shrugged and shook his head. "I dunno. Why?"
"We're all asking out the chics....You gotta do something." Adam said.
"I dunno." Zac said, shrugging.
"Why not? You've got the hots for each other, and you never wanted to break up in the first place." Scott said.
"I know..." Zac said reluctantly. "I dont' think Katie's ready." He said.
"Nah, she's ready. I saw the way you guys were playin' footsie under the table."
"We were not. Her shoe got stuck on mine."
"Riiiiight." Nate said, nudging Zac.
Zac laughed. "Okay, so maybe we were, but that's not the point. Playing footsie is one thing; a relationship is another." He said.
"I guess." Scott said.
"I'm not sure what I'm going to do." Zac said. And how he wished he did.
