"Katie!" Judy called.

"What?" Katie asked, sliding into the kitchen via her socks Thursday night.

"Phone." She said, holding out the phone.

"Oh. Who is it?" She asked.

Judy shrugged and handed her the phone so that she could go back to fixing dinner. Katie took the phone.

"Hello?'

She felt her stomach drop. "Hello?" She waited a few more seconds before hanging the phone up.

"Who was that?" Judy asked, looking up from the pasta she was stirring.

"Oh, just a prank call." Katie answered, shrugging as walked out of the kitchen. She tried to play it off so that Judy wouldn't suspect anything.

"Oh. OKay." Judy said. Katie smiled weakly and walked up the stairs to her bedroom.

"Zac!" Mackenzie yelled up the stairs. "Phone!"

"Got it!" Zac shouted back, picking up the phone on Taylor's nightstand.

"Hello?"

"Zac? Hi."

"Um, Hi."

"So what's up?"

"Uh, not much." Zac said, frowning. "Who is this?"

The voice on the other line giggled. "It's Brooke, silly."

Zac cringed. "Oh hi. Sorry." he said.

Brooke laughed. "That's okay."

Zac laughed nervously, hoping she wouldn't bring up the dance.

"Well, I just called to see if you had decided about the dance yet." She said.

Zac cringed again. No such luck.

"Um, not really."

"Oh." Brooke said. Zac could hear the dissapointment in her voice.

He thought a moment. He did want to go with Brooke, because she looked nice, and she was really cute. However, if Katie found out, she would most likely never speak to him again. That was okay with him at the moment though. He would often give himself headaches trying to figure her out. He was tired of her messing with his head.

"Um, Brooke. I don't know." He said, then waited for her response.

"Oh. Well....okay." She said. He could hear the dissappointment in her voice. As soon as he had said the words he regretted them.

"Um...I guess I'll....see you around." She mumbled, hanging up before he could respond.

Zac groaned and hung up the phone. Was it just him, or did he just make a major mistake?

Later that night, Katie was sitting up in her room trying to do her geometry when the phone rang. She jumped, then realized it was just her phone. She had been on frazzled ends the entire day since the phone call. She was convinced that it was someone seriously out to get her.

The phone continued to ring. When it was apparent that no one was going to pick it up, she picked it up.

"Hello?" She timidly asked.

"Hi." Nicole said.

Katie let out a sigh of relief. "Oh, hi." She said.

"What's up with you?" Nicole asked.

"Oh....nothing."

"You got another call, didn't you?"

Katie sighed heavily. "Yeah."

"Katie, this has got to stop. Tell Judy." Nicole said firmly.

"Nicole, I don't know that its' anything serious. It could just be Brian and one of his jokes."

"Katie, if this were a joke, would it go on this long?" Nicole asked.

"I dunno." Katie said.

"Just tell someone."

"Nicole.....no. I don't want to make something out of nothing.

"Well...I can't make you." Nicole replied.

"I know." Katie replied. "But I really do think it's Brian."

"Are you sure?"

"Positive."

"Oh."

"Have you talked to Zac lately?" Katie asked.

"No, why?"

"Just wondering." Katie said.

"Do you want to talk to him?"

"No." Katie said.

"Still mad?"

"No."

"Uh huh. I see." Nicole said. Katie couldn't fool her one bit.

"Look, you obviously want to talk to him, so-"

"Nicole, no I don't." Katie interjected.

Nicole heaved a sigh. "Whatever."
