Too much of something is bad enough
But something's coming over to make me wonder
Too much of nothing is just a tough
I need to know the way to feel to keep me satisfied
"Katie, you will not believe this." Nicole said, walking into Katie's kichen that afternoon after school.
"What?" Katie asked, opening the refridgerator.
"You know that dance?"
"yeah?"
"Well, Zac has a date."
Katie looked up suddenly and frowned. "He does? With who?" She asked.
Nicole took a deep breath. "Brooke Mullins." She said. It had been easy to piece together....the icerink, the conversation...Nicole had gotten it right away.
Katie's mouth dropped open. "You're kidding."
Nicole shook her head. "Nope."
"When did she ask him?"
"yesterday before lunch." Nicole answered.
"Oh my gosh...isn's she a sophomore?"
Nicole nodded.
"Oh my....I'm nothing compared to her."
"Don't talk like that." Nicole said.
"She's got nerve."
"Tell me about it."
"I don't believe it." She said. She had secretly been planning to ask Zac to go just as friends, but that idea was quickly going down the drain.
"Believe it." Nicole said.
"What did he say?"
"yes."
Katie was taken back. Why would he do such a thing? Well, he had every right to. They weren't going out, after all.
"I was going to ask him." She said softly, forgetting about her sandwhich.
"I know...I'm sorry sweetie." Nicole said.
"So am I."
Nicole was silent for a moment. "We'll get you another date. We'll show him. Don't worry about it." She said.
Katie shook her head. "I don't want another date. I don't even want to go." She said.
"Oh...are you sure?"
Katie nodded. "Yeah."
Nicole watched her best friend's eyes tear up. "I'm so sorry."
Katie wiped her eyes. "me too." She replied. Just then the phone rang. The girls both looked at it for a moment, then Nicole picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Hey." Zac said.
"Oh hi Zac." She replied, throwing Katie a relieved look.
"Can I talk to Katie?"
Nicole looked over at Katie, who was still wiping her eyes.
"Um, she's busy, but can I give her a message?" Nicole asked.
"What's she doing?"
"Zac!"
"Sorry...yeah, um, tell her that I'm baby sitting tomorrow night, and I wanted some company, so if she wants to come over around six, we could hang out." Zac replied.
Nicole frowned. "Couldn't you just have told her that tomorrow?" Nicole snapped.
"Sheesh Nicole. I just called her to talk. We are friends, you know." He said.
Nicole took a deep breath. "I'll tell her."
"Thanks....bye." Zac said quickly, hanging up. He wanted to hang up before she was able to take another crack at him.
He sat on his bed, contemplating the whole Brooke scenario. He didn't really want to go with her because she was a year older and he didn't know her at all and he would most likely not have a good time.
"This is not good." He muttered to himself, lying facedown on his bed. He rolled over onto his back, staring up at the ceiling. He knew that if Katie found up about the Brooke thing, she would most likely not ask him. He didn't know for sure that she was going to ask him, but they had been very good friends lately, and he thought he might have a prayer. However, if she knew about Brooke even liking him, she would back off, because that was just Katie. He sighed. What a mess...
"He wants to know if you want to babysit with him Friday night." Nicole said, switching off the phone.
"Oh." Katie replied, leaning against the counter and crossing her arms.
"Well are you?" Nicole asked.
"I dunno." She said. "He doesn't know that I know. It would look kind of silly of me to just not go because he's obviously moved on and replaced me." Katie said.
"Katie...."
"What?" She asked. "It's true. I waited too long."
"No, you didn't. He's not over you."
"How would you know?"
"Because...I talked to him a few days ago in the pharmacy, and he said then that he still liked you."
Katie was in shock. "He...He did?"
Nicole nodded. "Yeah...and I know he's liked you, ever since you guys broke up. I thought you knew that."
Katie shook her head. "I wasn't sure about it."
"Well he does. He still likes you. I know that for a fact. Besides, it shows." She said.
"But why would he have said yes to Brooke if he still liked me and thought that I might ask him?" Katie asked.
Nicole shrugged. "Guys are queer like that, I guess."
"It's going to be really weird going over there knowing that he still likes me."
"True. "
"But that would make it really awkward for me."
"I agree."
Katie covered her face with her hands. "God Nicole, what am I gonna do?"
Nicole only looked at her friend. She couldn't tell her.
